Kennedy Bakircioglu (Turkish: Bakırcıoğlu; Turkish pronunciation: [baˈkirt͡ʃoːɫʊ];[1] born 2 November 1980) is a Swedish footballer who plays as a midfielder for Hammarby IF, where he is the club captain.

He has spent the most of his career with Hammarby, first joining in 1999 then returning for a second spell in 2012, where he is widely regarded as the most prominent player in modern times. Bakircioglu has also competed professionally in Greece, the Netherlands (with both Twente and Ajax) and Spain.

Bakircioglu was a Swedish international for seven years.

Early life

Bakircioglu's family is ethnic Assyrian, followers of the Syriac Orthodox Church.[2] The family arrived in Sweden in 1972 from Midyat, Turkey.[3]

Born in Södertälje, Bakircioglu was named after the former United States president John F. Kennedy.[4] His father, Benjamin, was one of the first to play for newly founded Assyriska FF, a club established by the Assyrian diaspora.[5] Benjamin Bakircioglu played for Assyriska between 1976 and 1992 and is the club's record scorer.[6]

Club career

Assyriska

Bakircioglu started his professional career with Assyriska FF, making his debut for the club in 1996, at age 15. He would soon establish himself as a regular starter for the club in Division 1, by then the Swedish second tier, despite of his young age.[3]

In 1998, Bakircioglu saw a major breakthrough in his senior career and scored nine goals, whilst also providing eight assists, in 25 league games. During the winter said year, he had a trial with Manchester United, but did not impress enough to secure a contract with the English club.[7]

Hammarby

Before the start of 1999 season, Bakircioglu transferred to Hammarby IF in Allsvenskan. He scored his first competitive goal for the Stockholm-based side on 1 July the same year, in a 3-0 home win against IFK Norrköping.[8] He quickly became a fan favourite at his new club,[9] and ended the season playing 25 league games, scoring twice.[8] On 4 July, he made his continental debut in the second round of the 1999 UEFA Intertoto Cup, as Hammarby won 4–0 at home against FC Gomel.[10] In the away leg, about a week later, Bakircioglu scored a brace as Hammarby drew 2–2 and advanced through to the next round (where they ultimately got knocked out by SC Heerenveen).[8] At the end of the year, he was voted "Allsvenskan newcomer of the year".[4]

During the 2000 season, Bakircioglu was a key player in manager Sören Cratz's squad, playing as a central offensive midfielder behind the strikers.[11] He played all 26 league games and scored five goals, as Hammarby finished 8th in the league.[12]

In 2001, he scored eight goals in 26 games to lead the team to its first ever Allsvenskan championship win.[13] He also provided seven assists throughout the league play,[14] and was praised by pundits as player of the season at Hammarby.[15] On 21 October, Bakircioglu scored in the title-deciding fixture against Örgryte IS, as Hammarby won 3–2 home at Söderstadion.[16]

He continued the 2002 in similar fashion and scored eleven goals in 26 matches.[14] Hammarby, however, suffered a tough year in the table and failed to produce any sort of challenge in Allsvenskan, eventually finishing 9th.[17] As reigning Swedish champions, Hammarby took part in the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League, which they entered in the qualifying round, facing the Serbian SuperLiga side FK Partizan. Bakircioglu played both legs as Hammarby lost 5–1 on aggregate.[18] During the season, Bakircioglu reportedly attracted interest from the Süper Lig club Beşiktaş, but the deal fell through in the last minute.[19]

In 2003, Bakircioglu scored six goals in the first seven rounds of Allsvenskan, as Hammarby went on an unbeaten streak.[20] In September, Hammarby's board suspended Bakircioglu and Mikael Andersson because the parties could not agree to extend their outgoing contracts. The decision was, however, revoked after only a few days.[21] Roughly at the same time, Hammarby was surpassed by city rivals Djurgårdens IF at the top of table and eventually finished second in the league.[22] Bakircioglu scored twelve goals in 25 games during the campaign,[14] before leaving on a free transfer at the end of the year.[23]

A year after his departure from Hammarby, in 2004, Kennedy Bakircioglu was voted the club's fourth greatest player of all time.[24]

Iraklis

On 12 January 2004, Bakircioglu moved abroad to play in the Superleague Greece for Iraklis. He signed a two and half year-contract with the club, linking up with compatriot Mats Jingblad who held the managerial position at Iraklis.[23] He was, however, sparingly used in his only full campaign.

Twente

Bakircioglu playing for Ajax

Bakircioglu moved teams and countries again in the 2005 off-season, signing with FC Twente in the Netherlands and impressing manager Fred Rutten straight away to become a first-team regular. In 2006–07, he scored a career-best 15 goals in the Eredivisie as the Enschede side finished fourth and qualified to the UEFA Cup.

Ajax

His efforts did not go unnoticed and, on 5 May 2007, newspaper De Telegraaf announced that the player had reached an agreement with fellow league side AFC Ajax.[25] He was officially signed ten days later, and scored on his official debut, an 8–1 away routing of De Graafschap.[26][27]

In August 2008, new Ajax manager Marco van Basten deemed Bakircioglu surplus to requirements,[28] but the player decided to stay,[29] being restricted to only 17 league games in two seasons combined. He did score, however, a crucial goal for the Amsterdam team, in the 2008–09 UEFA Cup, in a 1–0 away win against ACF Fiorentina in the round-of-32 (2–1 aggregate success).[30][31]

Racing Santander

Bakircioglu left Ajax in June 2010, signing for Spain's Racing de Santander early in the following month.[32][33] He started in all but two games he appeared in his first season, as the Cantabrians retained their La Liga status; three of his league goals came in the last month of competition, against RCD Mallorca (2–0 home win),[34] Atlético Madrid (2–1, home)[35] and Athletic Bilbao (1–2 home loss).[36]

Bakircioglu spent the vast majority of 2011–12 nursing an achilles tendon injury,[37] and Racing would also return to Segunda División after one full decade in La Liga.

Return to Hammarby

At the end of August 2012, Bakircioglu returned to Hammarby as the club was now in the Superettan.[38] In 2014, whilst also acting as team captain, he led all scorers with 17 goals and contributed with seven assists, helping to a return to the top flight.[39]

Playing as a regular in both the 2015 and 2016 season, with the team finishing 11th on both occasions, Kennedy signed a new one year-contract with Hammarby in December 2016.[40] During later years, Bakircioglu repositioned himself as a defensive central midfielder, dictating the game as a playmaker.[41]

International career

Bakircioglu gained 14 caps for Sweden, after appearing in as many games for the under-21s. His debut came in 2001 whilst at Hammarby, but he never appeared in a major international tournament.
