Multicultural BRIDGE (Berkshire Resources for the Integration of Diverse Groups and Education, or BRIDGE Inc.) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Lee, Massachusetts. Co-founded by Gwendolyn Hampton VanSant and Marthe Bourdon in 2007, BRIDGE serves multicultural groups in Berkshire County, Massachusetts and the greater community.[1] These services include workforce cultural literacy[2] and cultural competency training,[3] consulting and facilitation,[4] youth leadership and multicultural education programs,[5] community-based civil rights and social justice forums and conferences, and multicultural advocacy.[6] BRIDGE is a minority and women-run nonprofit and is certified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Massachusetts Supplier Diversity Program Provider.[7]
Milestones
- Formation of the Berkshire County Race Task Force, a collective of local educators, law enforcement, lawyers, and civil rights leaders.[8] In collaboration with the Community Relations Service of the U.S. Department of Justice and the Stockbridge town police, the Race Task Force held a community discussion at Shakespeare & Company in October 2009.[9]
- Creation of the BRIDGE Youth Corps in partnership with Lenox Memorial High School, Berkshire School, Monument Mountain Regional High School, Pittsfield High School, and other Berkshire County public and private schools.[10]
- Delivered cultural competence training to employees of the town of Great Barrington and the Pittsfield Police Department[11]
- Held Cultural Competency Celebration with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick as keynote speaker at Shakespeare & Company, which honored public and private sector groups for their philanthropy with the local immigrant community.[12][13]
- Facilitated a screening and discussion of the film Freedom Riders at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in collaboration with WGBY; panelists included four Freedom Riders.[14]
- Participated in town hall meeting on the growing Berkshire immigrant population at the Norman Rockwell Museum.[15]
- Launched "On The Bridge,” a recurring blog on The Berkshire Eagle profiling multicultural leadership in Berkshire County.[16] These profiles were collected into an anthology crowdfunded through IndieGogo in late 2014.[17]
- Launched "Living African-American History Project" featuring twenty African-American professionals educating students at Pittsfield High School.[18]
- Presented on cultural competency programs and social justice at the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues Tenth Biennial Convention.[19]
- Hosted the Berkshire County Civil Rights Conference in November 2014 with Massachusetts U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz as keynote speaker.[20] Massachusetts State Representative William Smitty Pignatelli, State Legislator Tricia Farley-Bouvier, and Pittsfield Mayor Daniel Bianchi were also in attendance.
