Chittagong Medical College, (Bengali: চট্টগ্রাম মেডিকেল কলেজ)also known as CMC in general, is one of the most prestigious government medical colleges in Bangladesh, established in 1957.^[1] It is the largest Medical College in Chittagong Division and second largest medical college in Bangladesh. It is located in the south-eastern port city of Chittagong, and associated with Chittagong University.

It is not known exactly when and how the practice of the western medicine started in Chittagong, the extreme southeastern part of the Indian Peninsula. No reliable information is available before the establishment in 1901 of a 200-bed “Chittagong General Hospital” over a hilltop at the downtown Anderkillah overlooking the Karnaphuli River- the only modern hospital in the region at the time. This hospital served the entire population of Chittagong Division.

With the passage of time it was felt necessary to enhance healthcare facilities as well as the quality of healthcare. Consequently, a four-year Licentiate course in Medicine was introduced in the subcontinent to produce sufficient number of mid-level physician to serve mainly the rural population. The institutes that conducted this course were called “Medical School”. One such institution, Chittagong Medical School, was established in Chittagong in 1927.

In 1956, the after government decided to establish a medical college in Chittagong. It was to be the second of such institution after Dhaka Medical College and Hospital established eight years earlier in 1948, in the Eastern province of the erstwhile Pakistan, which later on went on to emerge as the independent state of Bangladesh in 1971. In 1957, the Chittagong medical College came into being. Befittingly, this instruction has earned the admiration of all by actively participating in the great Liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. Many students and teachers of this college fought gallantly to significantly contribute towards achieving the final Victory.^[1]

Notable Principals

CMC admits 193 students to MBBS & 50 students to BDS(Bachelor of Dental Surgery) course annually on the basis of merit. Both male and female students are eligible for admission. Every year eligibility and all other admission related matters are determined by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Bangladesh. However, the basic requirement for admission in a Medical and a Dental college in Bangladesh is a candidate must have Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC) examination. It is also required that a candidate must have Biology, Chemistry and Physics among the subjects taken in HSC.^[2]

A numbers of foreign nationals (not exceeding 10 per session) can also apply for admission. These candidates must be from the countries with which the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh his cultural agreements and/or other type of relevant Diplomatic understandings. They are selected for admission through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health and family Welfare and for most of them the tuition fees are waived.^[2]

Currently, students from Bhutan, India, Iran, Jordan, Malaysia, Nepal, Palestine, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri-Lanka, Maldives, Canada and USA are studying in various phases of MBBS course in CMC.^[2]

“Shimu Granthagar” the main college library is located in the western block of the college building. Extended over two stories, it consists of a reference for the use of the faculty and doctors of the College and Hospital. International medical journals are regularly being received through donations from the British Council, the Asia Foundation and WHO. Journals are also being received from the National Health Library and Documentation Center (NHLDC), Dhaka.

There are two reading rooms with an accommodation of about 120 students. They can borrow text and other books to read on the reading room of the library as well on a take home basis for a limited period. All the students of CMC are members of the British Council Library and each of them can Borrow maximum four books at a time and keep them for as long as six months. This provides an excellent opportunity for our students to access to modern medical text books of their own liking.

The college library has a collection of over 26000 volumes of text books – about 2800 titles. Besides, there is a collection of about 1000 slides used as teaching aid by the teachers. Our Library is also providing modern internet access facilities.

The centre is located at the 5th floor of the Hospital beside the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. It offers excellent facilities to the students to practice skills on different clinical activities. Among the facilities available are mannequins, dummies, a variety of equipments and instruments, electronic audio-visual training aids like closed circuit television connected to the operation-theater rooms, video cassette recording and replaying facilities, public address system movies, still cameras, slide and movie projectors and so on. Tastefully decorated and richly equipped, this centre is a pride addition to the repertoire of the teachers to the teachers to impart effective practical teaching to their students.^[3]

There are 31 Post Graduate Courses in different disciplines running in CMC. It has MD courses in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Cardiology, Neuromedicine, Nephrology and Dermatology. It also runs MS courses in General Surgery, Urology, Pediatric Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, Ophthalmology and Obstetrics and gynaecology. The selection of students in various post graduate courses is done by the local admission committee under the directives of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and DGHS. The Admission test for MD,MS courses is held on the last Friday of September & M.Phil, MPH and all Diploma courses is held on the last Friday of March. Each year classes of MD, MS Courses start in January and M.Phil, MPH, Diploma Courses begin in July. Chittagong Medical College (CMC) is one of the few Medical Colleges in Bangladesh which has postgraduate courses along with graduation courses (MBBS and BDS). The postgraduate medical education program was introduced in 1992, with three diploma courses in Child Health (DCH), Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGO) and Anaesthesiology (DA) In 2002, a total of 28 post graduate courses were added in various clinical, para-clinical and basic subjects. In 2005, Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology and Head neck surgery and MD in Forensic Medicine were included.

Among the 31 Post graduate (PG) courses MD in 9 disciplines, M.Phil in 6 disciplines, MPH in 1 discipline and diplomas in 7 disciplines. All the Post Graduate courses are organized as per the recommended ordinance & curriculum of the University of Chittagong. These courses are recognized by BMDC.^[2] Under-graduate courses are certified by University of Chittagong. Post-graduate courses are certified by BSMMU.^[4] There are some diploma courses are also running in various disciplines. There is a large hospital adjacent to the College named Chittagong Medical College Hospital.The college is situated in between Chawkbazar and Probortok circle.

CMC is one of the best Medical Colleges in Bangladesh to develop clinical knowledge and surgical skills. It has also got research projects^[5] in various specialities, like 'Malaria Research Project' which runs in cooperation with University of Oxford.
