Rhun ap Iorwerth AM is a Welsh politician and journalist who represents Ynys Môn in the Welsh Assembly.[1] He is a member of Plaid Cymru.

Early and personal life

Born on Anglesey, he was educated at Ysgol David Hughes in Porthaethwy.[2]

Married, the family is resident on the island.[3]

Career

In 1994, he joined BBC Wales, rising to become its Chief Political correspondent for five years. He then became North Wales correspondent, featuring on all BBC News channels. During this time he also worked for S4C, becoming the main presenter for the BBC Cymru Wales evening news programme Newyddion, as well as working on a number of other projects and outside broadcasts.[4]

In January 2012, he was announced as one of the patrons of the Cronfa Betsi Fund, the charitable arm of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.[5]

Political career

On 20 June 2013, former Plaid Cymru leader Ieuan Wyn Jones resigned from the seat in order to take a post leading the new Menai Science Park,[6][7] triggering a by-election in the constituency.[8]

After gaining special dispensation from the Plaid national executive committee (as a serving political journalist, he could not nominally be a member of a political party), Ap Iorwerth was accepted as a nominee, and immediately stepped-down from his commitments at BBC Cymru Wales from 26 June, including Newyddion9.[9]

The resultant by-election became a tough local debate, in which Wylfa Nuclear Power Station became a key issues, and the fact that should Welsh Labour have won then they would have a majority in the Assembley. On 1 August 2013 Ap Iorwerth gained 12,601 votes, more than three times the number of votes secured by his Welsh Labour rival Tal Michael, on a turnout of 42.45%.[10][11]
