== Maybe you know this person ==

Pete, I was doing a quick search for a picture for [[Norma Paulus]], and came across [http://www.flickr.com/photos/thomasngo/2187880476/ this one on Flickr] and I think I recall you mentioning at some point you worked with the Bus Project, and I know you know [[Jefferson Smith]]. We can't use the pic as is, since the license doesn't allow for commercial use, but I was wondering if you might know the photographer (could have just been hired for the event) or know of someone else who was at that party and might a pic they might upload. If you know the photographer, we would only need a cropped headshot version of Paulus. Let me know, thanks. [[User:Aboutmovies|Aboutmovies]] ([[User talk:Aboutmovies|talk]]) 23:23, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
: I know both Smith and Paulus (though I suspect Paulus doesn't "know" me ;) Don't know the photographer though. I've had pretty good luck just approaching random Flickr photographers directly though (see, e.g., [[LeGarrette Blount]]), and would suggest you send the guy a message. I generally send them to OTRS rather than having them set up a Commons account and learn all the ins-and-outs. Let me know if you want some more help. You're right, it's a great picture of her! (You also might approach her directly, I could help with that.) -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 00:44, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
::I think I'll try her first directly, as we both went to the same law school. Send me an email with any contact info you have. Thanks. [[User:Aboutmovies|Aboutmovies]] ([[User talk:Aboutmovies|talk]]) 07:33, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

==Nav box==
That would be better, methinks, than a list. Two other thoughts come to mind: (1) If the navbox appears in the Johnson Creek article, shouldn't it also appear in the other articles linked to in the nav box? (2) Eventually someone will decide to complete the list by adding all of the named streams (like the Johnson Creek tributaries) in Portland that don't have separate articles. Do we want to go there? [[User:Finetooth|Finetooth]] ([[User talk:Finetooth|talk]]) 17:26, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
:I'll try my hand at creating a nav box (my first ever). "Watersheds managed partly by the City of Portland" is as good a title as I can come up with this morning. (I don't believe the city has full control of any water body; state and national regs, for example, apply to all streams.) I think I should include [[Columbia River]] and [[Portland Water Bureau]]. I'll try this out with Johnson Creek and see how it looks. [[User:Finetooth|Finetooth]] ([[User talk:Finetooth|talk]]) 17:37, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
::Done. Since this is my first navbox experience, would you mind looking it over before I save it as a template in the main article space (or whatever it's called)? I assume I do that in the same way I would create an article that does not yet exist. The navbox is at the moment only at [[User:Finetooth/Sandbox2]] at the top of the page. Thanks for the nudge and the ideas. [[User:Finetooth|Finetooth]] ([[User talk:Finetooth|talk]]) 20:57, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
:::Thanks for checking and the kind words. I think PWB is close to GA, but I'm aware of a couple of missing things. I'm working on Bull Run as well; I'd like to take one of the PWB tours next summer and get some photos from inside the restricted zone. The Willamette still needs a lot of work; I keep edging up to it and nibbling every once in a while. [[User:Finetooth|Finetooth]] ([[User talk:Finetooth|talk]]) 19:03, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

==PGE report==
That link worked but only intermittently. Frustrated by its slowness, I found a version at the PGE web site with yet another [http://www.portlandgeneral.com/community_environment/initiatives/protecting_fish/sandy_river/docs/sandy_river_history_full.pdf url]. This one works smoothly, so I'm using it in the Sandy Basin articles. Alas, the PGE website says of everything on the site, "All information, documents, products and services, trademarks, logos, graphics, images and other proprietary materials provided on this site are subject to trademark, service mark, copyright and/or intellectual property rights or licenses held by PGE or by third parties who have licensed their material to PGE." Still, I was interested to learn about [[s:Main Page|Wikisource]], which I had never looked at before. [[User:Finetooth|Finetooth]] ([[User talk:Finetooth|talk]]) 03:36, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

== History merge needed ==

Pete, could you do a history merge on [[Bela S. Huntington]] to bring in the original history from [[User:Eino81/Bela Huntigton]]? The editor there apparently copy and pasted from the user space version instead of using the move feature, which as I did extensive editing on the user space version means there are problems with the licensing and attribution. Thanks. [[User:Aboutmovies|Aboutmovies]] ([[User talk:Aboutmovies|talk]]) 10:12, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
: Hooboy. I don't know how to do that. I'll try to read up and figure it out, but it may be a job for a more tech-savvy admin! -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 00:54, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
::If you can do it, great, if not just let me know as I'm sure there is a notice board somewhere for it. Thanks. [[User:Aboutmovies|Aboutmovies]] ([[User talk:Aboutmovies|talk]]) 07:30, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
::: OK boss, I'm [[Wikipedia:How to fix cut-and-paste moves|going in]]. If you don't hear from me within 12 hours, send in the Editor Rescue Squadron. -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 21:23, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
:::: OK, I think it's set. I did not follow the complete instructions, just step 1 -- because I believe no edits had been made after the copy-paste. Is that correct? Or am I missing something? -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 21:41, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
:::::No, there were some edits after the copy paste on the pasted article, and they need to be restored as it is for the DYK nom. Minor items (added some cats and info about 1897), but should be in the history. Thanks. [[User:Aboutmovies|Aboutmovies]] ([[User talk:Aboutmovies|talk]]) 22:20, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
:::::: OK, think I finally got it. (Is this some sort of elaborate test to see whether I really deserve my adminship??) Turns out that the initial user page had a typo I didn't notice, so I initially tried to move it to Huntigton instead of Huntington. I believe it's all squared away now. Take another look? -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 23:02, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
:::::::I finished up, everything looks good, thank you. And now you have the experience too! [[User:Aboutmovies|Aboutmovies]] ([[User talk:Aboutmovies|talk]]) 03:10, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
:::::::: Oh good. Sorry if I missed some stuff, but glad to hear it's back on track. I think maybe I can improve the instructions a bit at [[Wikipedia:How to fix cut-and-paste moves]] to make it clearer what the overall method is; so yes, valuable experience indeed! -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 05:12, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

==Images in Scott's ''History of Portland''==
Hi Pete. Maybe you can help me with a puzzle. I've used the link you've provided on the Oregon project's reference desk page to thumb through Harvey Scott's ''History of Portland'' on various occasions. The book has a list of illustrations but, apparently, no illustrations in the Google Books version. I'd like to upload mug shots from Scott, but where are they? I can't tell if I can't see them because of a setting on my computer or whether they really aren't there. Scott's book is [http://books.google.com/books?id=UsKKpvOVRRUC&printsec=titlepage#v=onepage&q=&f=false here], and the list of illustrations is on page 13. [[User:Finetooth|Finetooth]] ([[User talk:Finetooth|talk]]) 17:05, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
:Chiming in. Looking at that book, it is listing the images as "facing p. ##". Which means they don't have an actual page number, so either Google couldn't process it properly (I have noticed other similar errors in Google Books) and the images were left out, or the scanning people just didn't scan them since there were no page numbers. Nonetheless, there are no images in the Google version. But, [http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofportlan00scot#page/34/mode/2up this version] does. If you click on the title link in the reader you can get the other display/version options so you could download the PDF and pull out the pics. [[User:Aboutmovies|Aboutmovies]] ([[User talk:Aboutmovies|talk]]) 19:02, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
::Oh, thanks. Brilliant. I did not think of trying the Internet Archive. I've now got what I was looking for (Frank Dekum's mug). I saw that Rootsweb had posted a 32kb copy from Scott, but going to the original source is better. I've been looking for a free George Weidler mug too but haven't found one. I wonder if I could talk the Oregon Historical Society into releasing its entire holdings into the public domain. Probably not. [[User:Finetooth|Finetooth]] ([[User talk:Finetooth|talk]]) 19:57, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
:::On the last bit, LOL. Unless they get new leadership/funding they will never do that, too much revenue for them. It's really funny. If you haven't had the dis-pleasure of visiting their library for research and wanted to get a copy of something, they charge a fair amount just for the copy, and then they are sure to stamp the thing trying to claim copyright. Problem is, the one thing I was getting was a hand written letter from 1850 from someone who died in 1850, so not really in copyright, and I seriously doubt they even ever would have had the rights since I'm pretty sure the letter was donated by the estate of the recipient and not the author. I'm sure they get donations of physical pictures/letters all the time, but I doubt that they actually get the copyright handed over to them very often. It's actually kind of sad that our premiere historical society has so many resources tucked away going largely unused, when they could easily be used to better cover our collective past. That at I'm annoyed that the [[Hillsboro Argus]] doesn't have an online archives. But, time to get off the soapbox. [[User:Aboutmovies|Aboutmovies]] ([[User talk:Aboutmovies|talk]]) 20:38, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
::::Yeah, despite being 1.5 blocks from OHS, I walk further to go to libraries instead. It's sad they have a sort of anti-community bias :-/ [[User:Tedder|tedder]] ([[User talk:Tedder|talk]]) 21:29, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Great discussion -- sorry to miss the earlier bits. On the topic of interacting with the OHS: in case any of you is unaware, I did a presentation along with {{user|Steven Walling}} and {{user|Cacophony}} to the editorial team of the ''[[Oregon Encyclopedia]]'', who are closely linked with the OHS. I think it's fair to say that they look favorably on our work, but (as AM suggests) are not inclined toward releasing their holdings, etc. But if/when people want to contact them, I think it's a great idea; and it might not be a bad idea to talk with me, Steven, or Cacophony first, to get a feel for the history between our groups.

By the way, to clear up a strong misconception I've had about copyright -- I think AM always knew this, but I think there are many people who don't quite get it. If a publisher (e.g. OHS) publishes something that's in the pubic domain (because it was originally published before 1923, or is a work of the federal gov't, etc.) -- they cannot claim copyright unless they have added something creative to it as a derivative work. So, if you go to their library, for instance -- and can get past their draconian prohibitions on scanning, etc. -- don't be too intimidated by the © symbols you see on things that you think are in the public domain. Just use your best judgment! -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 22:53, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

== Assistance request ==

Hi. I'm looking for someone to help assist a famous engineer (unconfirmed, but likely), with the editing of Wikipedia. All the details can be found by a quick perusal of [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&limit=100&target=DeanKamen his contributions] and our brief discussions at his talkpage (See the pre-blanked state in [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:DeanKamen&oldid=356710318 this April diff], and [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:DeanKamen&oldid=361123677 this May diff]). I'm hoping you could either help him out, or help me find someone else appropriate to do so. I'm watchlisting everything, so reply/act wherever (and please let me know if I've done anything terribly wrong, so far :) Much thanks. -- [[User:Quiddity|Quiddity]] ([[User talk:Quiddity|talk]]) 04:03, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Pete. Somebody I met in Arizona this fall took an interest in my interest in Wikipedia and sent me an e-mail today asking if I knew of any Wikipedian who might be willing to give a talk to members of [http://www.creativeabq.org/about-us/index Creative Albuquerque]. She says the group has guest speaker luncheons on a quarterly basis and an annual symposium. Her note was short, and I have no further details. I responded to her by saying that I'd ask the one Wikipedian I know who might be able to answer her question. I can send you her e-mail if you want to talk directly to her, or I can relay a message if that works better. Thanks. == Population growth table and graph for [[Eugene, Oregon|Eugene]] ==

Hi, Pete— I'd like to ask you a quick question about whether or not it's best to have [[Eugene, Oregon#Demographics|here]] both the historical population table according to U.S. Census data as well as [[:File:Eugene population.png|this graph of the same data]]. And on the graph, it looks rather awkward for the scale to break at the end because of 2008's population estimate. I asked about this before [[Talk:Eugene, Oregon#Chart and table for demographics|here]], so feel free to answer over there. == Review of new article ==

Hi Pete, I noticed you're an admin on WikiProject Oregon and I thought you can help me out with this. Don't want to waste too much of your time; maybe there is a section in that project where I can ask for help regarding this instead? I saw one [[Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Oregon/Sports|discussion page]] with potential but the last entry was in 2007. Anyway, I recently created the article [[Oregon Ducks track and field]] and think it could be close to a good article nomination; I figured I should ask someone to look at it first. I looked over the [[Wikipedia:Good article criteria|criteria]] and I'm mostly concerned about 4, 5, and 6a. '''4-'''I think there may be some bias in the article but I ''think'' I adequately referenced anything that can be construed as an opinion. '''5-'''Well, the article has only been up for a day, so I'm not sure if there needs to be a certain period of time before nomination? I don't foresee any potential edit wars. '''6a-'''A bot posted a possible copyvio on the Bowerman image. I'm not sure how to address this though (or even if it should remain), aside from deleting the image altogether. Thanks, I appreciate your help. [[User:Cluskillz|Cluskillz]] ([[User talk:Cluskillz|talk]]) 17:28, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

== Campaign and Legislation Finance Data ==

Hey Pete, so word on the grapevine is you want to work on a large-scale historical project concerning legislative information? Either way, this is an awesome project idea. I think most people can agree there isn't good coverage of legislative information on Wikipedia--and historical info is often the least contentious and so very useful.

Do you have an idea for how this project will take shape? I am interested because I wanted to discuss with you the potential for working on integrating campaign and legislative finance data into Wikipedia. I think a good way to approach this might be to create a project group, add a few changes as tests, expand as is natural to more and more articles, and aim toward setting up a bot (or bots) to regularly update this type of information (as necessary). However, if your project is concerned with the general coverage of legislative information (including campaign finance), then perhaps this works as a sub-goal, or sub-task.

I think it would be great to get the ball rolling on organizing a group of people who are interested in seeing this information become more accessible, and to provide space for growth as tasks come to completion. Let me know what you think. It may make sense to organize smaller groups, but you are the veteran here, so I'd love some advice ;).

I've solicited and garnered a [[Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28idea_lab%29#Campaign_Finance_Data_for_Legislators_and_Legislation.2C_a_Bot_Idea|bit of feedback]] on running a bot to update the type of info that is accessible from maplight.org's API on the village pump.

:Hi, Pete. ''Vallejo'' got 3,500 page views on its DYK date! In my experience, that's pretty darn good for a (small) article that is not in the top-of-list, with-photo spot in DYK! Nice work.<br> However, I wanted to let you know, for the next time you nominate for DYK, that you accidentally forgot (or didn't realize it was required now) to transclude your nomination on the main [[Template talk:Did you know|DYK nominations page]] after creating it. That step only became necessary when changes to DYK were put into effect in late July, or about one month before your ''Vallejo'' nomination. It's in the new instructions, but you may have missed it. As a result, your nomination went virtually unseen for almost 5 days after you created [[Template:Did you know nominations/Vallejo (ferry)|the page for it]], because it wasn't being displayed on the DYK nominations page. At that point, I discovered it, only because I was checking your User Contributions page (take that as a compliment; I sometimes check those pages for users who do interesting editing in subjects that interest me), at which point I [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template_talk:Did_you_know&diff=prev&oldid=447112731 transcluded your nomination] onto the DYK nominations page (initially under the wrong date, which I fixed a few hours later). Only then, when the 5-day time limit was about to expire, did your nomination appear in a place where other people would be likely to see it. I could claim to have "saved" your nomination at the last minute, but I'd like to think that if someone else had discovered the oversight after the 5 days had run out, they'd have reset the clock from the time it became visible on the nominations page. Who knows .... but it worked out well this time. As I said, this is a new step only recently added to the nominations process. Having a separate nomination page/template for each individual nom has the great advantage of allowing individual noms to be watchlisted (which I believe may have been the main reason for that change), but it added that step that you overlooked. I'm surprised that (evidently) no one has created a bot to do that transclusion automatically. [[User:SJ Morg|SJ Morg]] ([[User talk:SJ Morg|talk]]) 06:04, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

:: Many thanks, SJ Morg -- both for rescuing my nomination, and for the detailed explanation! I had missed that part of the instructions, apparently. You're right, it sounds like something a bot should look after. But regardless, I'll watch out for this next time. Thanks again for your insights in the nom. I will probably do a little more expansion soon, and will add a lead section at that time. -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 17:21, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

[[File:The Childrens Museum of Indianapolis - Kit Cat Klock.jpg|thumb|left|Kit Cat Klock|130px]]
It's time again to share the latest news on the '''[[WP:GLAM/TCMI|Children's Museum of Indianapolis Wikipedia project]]'''! In the last few months we have been busy with our third image donation, which was made up of 150 images that were professionally photographed specifically for this upload. We are asking for volunteers to '''categorize''' these images and '''distribute''' them into Wikipedia articles. Your help is appreciated! Check them out '''[[Commons:Category:Batch 3 Images from The Children's Museum of Indianapolis|here]]'''.

We have also donated our first '''[[Commons:File:ElectrolyticReduction.ogg|video]]''' and a second '''[[Commons:File:GLAM-Wiki Infographic.PNG|GLAM-Wiki Infographic]]''' to Commons. In September we were thrilled to '''[http://blog.childrensmuseum.org/blog/wikipedian-in-residence/hosting-wikipedia-royalty welcome Jimmy Wales]''' to the museum. Following our successful '''[http://blog.childrensmuseum.org/blog/wikipedian-in-residence/wikipedians-in-the-museum-and-beyond Edit-a-Thon and Translate-a-Thon]''' in August, translations have continued with the help of the established QRpedia community, (particularly Russian translations thanks to [[User:Lvova|Lvova]]!) We have begun to analyze our implementation of QRpedia codes and completed an extensive '''[[outreach:GLAM/Case studies/The Children's Museum of Indianapolis/QRpedia|case study]]'''. In November we presented at the Museum Computer Network conference about how museums can effectively collaborate with Wikipedia. You can see more details on the '''[http://prezi.com/kqmtxcz37kkf/practical-methods-for-collaborating-with-wikipedia/ Prezi]'''.

In more general news, in addition to serving as the Children's Museum's Wikipedian-in-Residence, it was recently announced that I will be taking on the role of '''[http://blog.wikimedia.org/2011/12/07/us-cultural-partnerships-coordinator-lori-byrd-phillips/ US Cultural Partnerships Coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation]'''. In this role I will be working to streamline the process of connecting interested US GLAMs with the Wikipedia community. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to let me know. Be sure to sign up for '''[[outreach:GLAM/Newsletter|This Month in GLAM]]''' to keep up with the latest GLAM-Wiki news from around the world ([[Meta:Global message delivery/Targets/GLAM|subscribe]]).

We have a listing of High Need and Moderate Need requests on the '''[[WP:GLAM/TCMI/Volunteer|Ways to Help]]''' section on the project page. I encourage you to lend a hand if you're able. While the Children's Museum partnership continues to truck along, we still are in desperate need of volunteers to help disperse our images and update and maintain content. Thank you for your time and help. Happy holidays! [[User:LoriLee|LoriLee]] ([[User talk:LoriLee#top|talk]]) 16:45, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Peteforsyth,<br>
[[User talk:5 albert square#Advertiser|5 albert square]] directed me to you about the following question: I have reverted
[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Anne_Clark&curid=1061760&diff=475011822&oldid=473317123 this edit] and issued a warning on the user's [[User_talk:Anne_Clark_Official#February 2012|talk page]]. User has been blocked before, but despite warnings adds 'official websites' again. Since I'm not sure what next step to take, if any, would you be so kind looking into it? Thank you, [[User:Quibus| — Quibus]] ([[User talk:Quibus|talk]]) 10:06, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
: Looks like you reverted the edit, so I'm assuming this is resolved for now. I don't see any problem with the web site being there (the Facebook page is of course a problem though). This user clearly has some learning ahead, but if you're looking for a block or something, I'm not sure that would be appropriate; after a few reverts, I'm sure he/she will start to get the idea. Thanks for asking. -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 13:40, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
::Thanks for having a look. I assumed since this user was blocked before, some kind of action was needed. I'm not that familiar with the whole websites policy; is Facebook not done anyway, or just this one? Homepages seem ok as long as they're not all about selling product and advertising, is this similar? [[User:Quibus| — Quibus]] ([[User talk:Quibus|talk]]) 19:21, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
::: For external links, you will probably find this page informative: [[WP:EL]]. In general, it's fine for a page to have one link to the subject's home page, but not to multiple profiles on various sites (Facebook, blog, MySpace, etc.) Generally the advice would be, put those links on your own web site's home page -- don't clutter up Wikipedia with a bunch of promotional stuff just to drive traffic to those sites. (The central idea is, what's actually useful to the reader? If the reader's trying to find the Facebook profile, they can probably go one extra click to the web site to find it.)
::: For blocks, there is a page on the blocking policy here: [[WP:BLOCK]] -- again, most basically, it's not something that needs to be done unless there is active harm that needs to be interrupted. A block isn't used as punishment, but as a way to interrupt real problems. If a user made one or two bad posts, it's not really a big deal; just fix the problem and move on. Hopefully, they will notice and start to learn what is and isn't accepted. -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 03:45, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

==MSU Interview==

Dear Peteforsyth,

My name is Jonathan Obar [[user:Jaobar]], I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community [[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_82#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-_New_class_at_MSU|HERE]], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:
* Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
* Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
* All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
* All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
* The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name [[User:Jaobar/Admins_to_Interview_List_1|HERE]] instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --[[User:Jaobar|Jaobar]] ([[User talk:Jaobar|talk]]) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

== Saturday! ==

*Hello, I am sending this message to editors who signed up for the Women's History Month Edit-a-thon. Please help spread the word. HighBeam Research--an online, pay-for-use search engine for newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias has agreed to give ''free, full-access, 1-year accounts'' for up to 1000 Wikipedia editors to use. HighBeam has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications, most of which are not available for free elsewhere on the internet. Aside from a free 7-day trial (credit card required), access to HighBeam would cost $30 per month or $200 per year for the first year and $300 for subsequent years, so this is a wonderful, free, no-strings-attached opportunity. To qualify, editors must have at least a 1 year-old account with 1000 edits. Please add your name to the [[WP:HighBeam/Applications]] account sign-up page if you are interested. : Hi Michael, thanks for the note, and for encouraging people to bring any concerns to me directly! I can't say I see a lot of benefit to jumping into the discussion on Jimmy's talk page, but I'm certainly willing to answer questions about my work. I'm not sure what the specific concerns are, but two things might be relevant: I haven't edited Wikipedia articles on behalf of my clients, and I only work with clients that agree in advance to clearly disclose their COI when making any edits. I'd also encourage anyone interested in how I approach my work to take a look at my blog, my Twitter streams (under my personal name and my business name), my Quora account, the Outreach wiki, Meta, WikiEducator. I tend to be pretty transparent about my work (to the extent time permits!) and tend to use the same username most places. Also, for whatever it's worth, working with corporate clients seeking to influence articles about themselves is a pretty tiny percentage of the work I do, and not something I'm actively seeking out these days. I'm much more engaged in the education and non-profit areas. -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 00:47, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

== Your HighBeam account is ready! ==

Good news! You now have access to 80 million articles in 6500 publications through HighBeam Research. Here's what you need to know:
* Your account activation code has been emailed to your Wikipedia email address.
**Only 407 of 444 codes were successfully delivered; most failed because email was simply not set up (You can set it in [[Special:Preferences]]).
**If you did not receive a code but were on the [[WP:HighBeam/Approved|approved list]], add your name to [[Wikipedia:HighBeam/Approved#Approved_but_code_not_received|this section]] and we'll try again.
* The 1-year, free period begins when you enter the code.
* To activate your account: 1) Go to [http://www.highbeam.com/prof1 http://www.highbeam.com/prof1]; 2) You’ll see the first page of a two-page registration. 3) Put in an email address and set up a password. (Use a different email address if you signed up for a free trial previously); 4) Click “Continue” to reach the second page of registration; 5) Input your basic information; 6) Input the activation code; 7) Click “Finish”. Note that the activation codes are one-time use only and are case-sensitive.
* If you need assistance, email "help at highbeam dot com", and include "HighBeam/Wikipedia" in the subject line. Or go to [[WP:HighBeam/Support]], or ask [[User:Ocaasi]]. Please, per HighBeam's request, do not call the toll-free number for assistance with registration.
* A quick reminder about using the account: 1) try it out; 2) provide original citation information, in addition to linking to a HighBeam article; 3) avoid bare links to non-free HighBeam pages; 4) note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
* HighBeam would love to hear feedback at [[WP:HighBeam/Experiences]]
* Show off your HighBeam access by placing <nowiki>{{User:Ocaasi/highbeam_userbox}}</nowiki> on your userpage
* When the 1-year period is up, check [[WP:HighBeam/Applications|applications page]] to see if renewal is possible. We hope it will be.
Thanks for helping make Wikipedia better. Enjoy your research! Cheers, [[User:Ocaasi|Ocaasi]] [[User talk:Ocaasi|t ]]&#124;[[Special:Contributions/Ocaasi| c]] 20:56, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

== Wikiproject OER ==

Hey there! I just wanted to touch base about the OER wikiproject that you're working on. I'm with [[The Saylor Foundation]] and we've actually already been looking at some of these pages in addition to some other WP-related work we've been doing. So, I wanted to let you know that we're definitely active and interested in participating in this effort. My only concern arises from the possible [[WP:COI|COI]] concerns that may crop up. While improving these pages in general is certainly not an issue, I wonder if perhaps those of us working with particular organizations might take care of adding information about one another so as to distance ourselves at least one level from potentially self-promoting edits. Obviously we all believe we're adhering to [[WP:NPOV|NPOV]], but better safe than sorry. I'd love to hear about any other plans or discussion that's happening related to this! :: Thank you both for the notes. I've looked through both cases. Glad to know, if nothing else, that my user page presents a useful example for discussion. For what it's worth: I don't regard my mentioning my work here as advertising, but as part of telling my Wikipedia story. I think it's useful for readers interested in me, to know about it among the other things I've done here. (Please note that it's mentioned in text, at the end of a pretty straightforward bio -- not in a big bright box, or anything like that.)
:: Also, in case it's helpful in any way, I just checked -- this year, about 7% of my web sites's visitors have clicked through from Wikipedia. Not sure what that might prove, but there it is :)

== Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested) ==

[[Credo Reference]], who generously [[WP:CREDO|donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts]] to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

* Link to Survey (should take between 5-10 minutes): [http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/N8FQ6MM http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/N8FQ6MM]

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through [[WP:RESOURCE|WikiProject Resource Exchange]]).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! [[User:Ocaasi|Ocaasi]] [[User talk:Ocaasi|t ]]&#124;[[Special:Contributions/Ocaasi| c]] 17:28, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

==Hand-coding==
Hey all :).

I'm dropping you a note because you've been involved in dealing with feedback from the [[Special:ArticleFeedbackv5|Article Feedback Tool]]. To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of [[hand coding]] - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).

You can code as many or as few pieces of feedback as you want: '''[[Wikipedia:Hand coding|this page]]''' should explain how to use the system, and there is a demo [http://toolserver.org/~grphack/aft/test.html here]. Once you're comfortable with the task, just drop me an email at {{nospam|okeyes|wikimedia.org}} and I'll set you up with an account :).

If you'd like to chat with us about the research, or want live tutoring on the software, there will be an [[m:IRC office hours|office hours]] session on Monday 17 December at [http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?hour=23&min=00&sec=0&day=17&month=12&year=2012 23:00 UTC] in {{channel|wikimedia-office}}. == Greetings from WikiProject Open Access ==
[[File:Gamma phage.png|thumb|120px|[[SEM]] of [[bacteriophages]].]]
Dear Pete,

it is now one year since [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Open Access|WikiProject Open Access]] was started by [[User:Bluerasberry]] on January 10, 2012. Since then, the project has advanced modestly, but we have not interacted much. For the coming year, we certainly want to improve on that.

We also plan to overhaul the project pages to make them more conducive to collaboration, and we are pondering the idea of expanding the concept of a WikiProject Open Access to projects other than the English Wikipedia, e.g. to other languages or to Wikimedia Commons. You are warmly invited to add your voice to all that. We would also appreciate if you would share some of your OA-related activities by way of our [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Open Access/News/Content|news ticker]] or via the monthly [[:outreach:Category:This Month in GLAM Open Access reports|Open Access report]] that is part of the [[:outreach:GLAM/Newsletter|GLAM newsletter]] (to which you can subscribe [[:m:Global message delivery/Targets/GLAM|here]]), or as you see fit otherwise.

As a visual token of the anniversary, I am adding today's [[:commons:Open Access File of the Day|Open Access File of the Day]]. Feel free to [[:commons:Open Access File of the Day/Nominations|nominate files]] yourself. As of today, [[:commons:Category:Open access (publishing)]] contains more than 15,000 files, of which about 2/3 are video and sound files uploaded by the [[:commons:User:Open Access Media Importer Bot|Open Access Media Importer]].

Thanks for being part of the project, and looking forward to more interaction. With a smile, --<font style="font-family:Monotype Corsiva; font-size:15px;"> [[User:Daniel Mietchen|Daniel Mietchen]] - [[:m:WiR/OS|WiR/OS]] ([[User talk:Daniel Mietchen|talk]]) </font> 23:38, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

This is a strange note to have to write. I went downtown this afternoon, parked near the Post Office, and walked to where I thought the meeting was. Nobody seemed to be about. I walked around, puzzled. After a while another person came down the street looking for the meeting. We exchanged introductions, tried to figure out what the problem was, and waited a while longer for others to show up. Eventually I said to [[User:EncMstr]], the other person, that I was going home, and I did. Where he went, I don't know. Perhaps he found you. When I got home, I discovered to my horror that I had been looking for you at 322 N.W. Seventh rather than Sixth. I hope this mistake was a one-off and not the start of a trend. Sorry. I should also point out [https://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/04/12/help-is-on-the-way-announcing-community-fellow-peter-coombe/ this fellowship], which did result in a nice reorganization of the help pages on English Wikipedia. At the moment, I'm not sure the Bookshelf is the best place to focus -- some of those materials are worthwhile, but as you can see the page overall is pretty disorganized and difficult to navigate. I only linked that because DC was asking specifically about the work I did for WMF, and that was the relevant piece. (But it wasn't my project, I was only playing a small support role on that, contributing contents to a couple of the brochures.) -[[User:Peteforsyth|Pete]] ([[User talk:Peteforsyth#top|talk]]) 19:11, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

I went with [40, -74.9], [37.3, -78.3] which is the one currently being used for the DC history event - I hadn't realised it was already there to crib from :-) Does the rectangle on [https://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://toolserver.org/~para/geonotices.php this] look okay, or would you prefer larger? == inviting students to Editathon? ==

Hi Pete,

I am the campus ambassador for two classes in the Boston area this semester. One is in the middle of their wikipedia assignments and one will be starting soon. Some of the students might benefit from some extra help with syntax and formatting. Can I invite them to the March 9th editathon? There are about 25 in the Boston College class and I'm not sure how many in the Tufts/SMFA class (I am presenting there on Monday), but given that its a Saturday, I don't know how many will come. I'll try to make it myself if I'm on top of my own schoolwork.

Hi there :-) I knew about the course, I apologize I did not have the time to write/spam about it! About your request, please note that the page was fully in English, which is not actually a very good idea, plus there were only a few lines of real bio and all the rest were many kb of text about the course itself, which were not appropriate there - and I guess it is released under some free license but there was no mention of it too... So, if your students must edit their home wikis, please remember it should be done in their local language :-) plus they must use sandboxes not userpages for everything else which is not strictly related to who they are. The user was warned and the sysop offered to send him the text so that you can double check as well. Ps, i have some humble experiences of wiki teaching as well and I learned a few things from them: a) maybe live editing a real wikipedia can get really tough, it.wiki users are considering using test2 wiki for that and i really, really, really recommend informing the community in advance before starting any activity so that patrollers and sysops can "whitelist" a few usernames - b) wikipedias do have different rules and behaviors, you may find for example italian ones are particularly strict about certain aspects, from notability to what is suitable in a userpage. Screenshot of user contributions

I like File:User contributions detail.svg but it was removed from Help:User contributions today as outdated.[1] Can you make an updated version with the red and green numbers described at Wikipedia:Added or removed characters? Also, "diff" and "hist" have swapped positions. An often overlooked detail is that the arrow at a section edit summary is a link to the section. It's a minor issue but perhaps this could be mentioned. PrimeHunter (talk)

Reverted edit to Q Continuum

Just a comment on a recent edit of yours to Q Continuum that I reverted ("Popups" doesn't always give me the opportunity to append a reason): The text of the {{No footnotes}} banner says "This article contains a list of references, related reading or external links...". So, as the article does have external links, the {{References}} template (a redirect to {{Unreferenced}}) doesn't apply.

Actually, I used to use the {{Unreferenced}} template all the time myself until I found out about this. I've been having to slowly replace them as I encounter them... — Cbbkr (talk) 22:24, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, neither of the 2 external links are Reliable sources (open wiki = WP:USERGENERATED), hence they could never be used as citation, hence Pete's edit was correct. {{Memoryalpha}} is for EL sections only, not for citations. –Quiddity (talk) 22:59, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. Thanks for explaining Q :) -Pete (talk) 21:42, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're invited...

to two upcoming Bay Area events:

  • Maker Faire 2013, Sat/Sun May 18-19, San Mateo -- there will have a booth about Wikimedia, and we need volunteers to talk to the public and ideas for the booth -- see the wiki page to sign up!
  • Edit-a-Thon 5, Sat May 25, 10-2pm, WMF offices in San Francisco -- this will be a casual edit-a-thon open to both experienced and new editors alike! Please sign up if on the wiki page if you can make it so we know how much food to get.

I hope you can join us at one or both! -- phoebe / (talk to me) 17:26, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The link you gave on my page was to an image that I did not submit, and have not edited. I would suggest you confirm that you did not accidentally alter the copyright of an image that you did not have permission to change. As I've said before, at the time of upload, I placed my service award images under the most permissive copyright tag that I was allowed, based on the copyright of the source images which I had modified. I continue to give permission to you or any other editor to change the copyright of my service award images to as free a license (up to absolute release into public domain) as can be, provided the copyright of source images allow derivatives to be released that freely. Thanks for the welcome

Thanks Pete, I'm not sure I would consider myself and experienced Wikipedian although I have been interested forever and would love to do more. I am just watching the recorded lab session right now and I know I will learning a lot.

I teach ICT for Teachers in graduate and undergraduate courses. In most classes students have to do a final project. I offer them the choice of doing a presentation, writing a paper or creating a Wikipedia article of substance that sticks. The occasional person takes me up on the challenge adding good quality entries. I hope to direct more people to this wonderful collaborative work. Aboriginal names RMs and CfRs

Hi Peter; I remember you, I think, as taking part in the discussions a few years ago about indigenous article and category names/structures in the PacNW; Pfly also suggested you as someone who had taken part. I know NorCalHistory was around for that, not sure who else; both he and Murderbike are on extended wikibreaks btw; recent unilateral changes by User:Kwami on many have resulted in arduous CfDs trying to revert to the indigenously-correct names, which are now common fare in Canada. It's beyond acrimonious now into the absurd, with citations produced and then picked apart on irrelevancies, and though there's others that support the moves I've proposed, they're ignored. And I'm being made the issue, and snotted on right and left, I'm an old man, I don't need this bullshit. I came back into Wikipedia last December or so because of anti-indigenous/POV edits on Idle No More and Theresa Spence, which have since been fixed and other experienced editors are now watching them; it's ironic and disturbing to me that indigenous preferences and accepted modern usages (e.g. Secwepemc vs. Shuswap people) are now being dismissed in favour or retrenchment of the discredited/outdate names despite tons of sources being produced to demonstrate the points demanded; they'll even say I haven't produced cites that I have, and presume to call me "childish" and accuse me of being parochial, when it's their attitudes that are parochial. A further problem with the RMs in question is that, like what's happened at Category:Squamish, which resulted from changing the Skwxwu7mesh article to Squamish people, and is a disaster in terms of the vagueness of the category's name now (as you know, I'm sure, Squamish's primary usage is for the town), the imposition of main article titles onto categories, and eventually bypassing redirects and substituting the outdated/discredited/"colonialist" names in texts in other articles, is going to cause a lot of problems because of the other uses of those older names, i.e. Chilcotin, Lillooet, Shuswap, etc....and "Thompson" for the Nlaka'pamux. Picayune silliness has ensued, I've spent over a week, as a professional writer who's around me during that time has pointed out, and more, on these, and I don't get paid for all that time, and my knowledge is being not just dismissed out-of-hand but treated very derisively. I don't need this shit, quite frankly, and may leave Wikipedia once again, though I'm pondering where in the hierarchy to take t he whole matter; not ANI, there's more than one editor involved in the "attack" mode and t he picking-apart obstructionism that's going on.....not an RfC, as more t han a comment is needed; ArbCom maybe, though I'm not clear on what they do. These RMs need closing, persuasive citations are rife, but ignored by those opposing the move or just being fussy, and who derogate Canadian and native sources saying "we don't care what your parochial local perspective" etc.....reason I'm here is because if I could locate the old discussions about all this, and the conventions that evolved by consensus, it might help. These usages are official now, most of them anyway, but we're hearing "we don't do official names at Wikipedia"....fact of the matter is the Queen Charlotte Islands->Haida Gwaii RM was finally clinched when the name was made official i.e. by government naming bureaus in Victoria and Ottawa. What's arbitrary is the nature of all the objections, and typically they demand cites without providing any of their own; Kwami has ranted he doesn't have to produce cites, it's not about disproving what he says, but about me proving what I'm saying; but his claim that these are the "most common" usage is complete horseshit, and he won't produce any cites to back that up, instead he dwells on whether or not they can be English words because "nobody knows how to pronounce them". The "article titles not in English" line has also been used, as if native-name articles don't exist (e.g. Mi'kmaq and its category, among hundreds of examples. Sorry for the rant, just fielding the problem and wondering if you can recall those discussions that we had while trying to sort out all the Pacific Northwest Coast/Northwest Plateau people/government articles and categories.....guidelines need to be established about all this; but right now, as I sad, the frustrations and insults and patronizing attitude from people who don't even know the subject matter at hand is so tiresome and degrading I'm considering leaving Wikipedia again for somewhere I might get paid for all this kind of time I put in on such matters and where I don't have to put up with the gamesmanship and obstructionism that's going on, and the ongoing attempts to make the RMs about me instead of the cites provided. These are, for your reference, to be found at Talk:Lillooet people, Talk:Kutenai people, Talk:Chilcotin people, Talk:Thompson people and Talk:Shuswap people. Amazingly, the CfD at Category:Sto:lo people looks like it's doing just fine....[the diacriticals on the current form of that are why This CfD).I'm finding it really grating, viewing my watchlist, which as you can guess is huge, seeing so many category fiddlings and code-fixes and bot-activity and very little in the way of actual article writing; people rearranging deck chairs on a ship, as it were. And here I am, the person who's probably done t he most in the way of FN articles and categories, not just being treated as if I'm stupid (gag) and that my extensive experience with these subjects has no value at all....the chauvinism towards native peoples in some of these RMs is also very shocking. Sorry I couldn't have been more succinct here, there's a lot that's gone on, as you'll see; Pfly, Montanabw, KootenayVolcano, OldManRivers and others have all made strong comments in support, they just get ignored......Skookum1 (talk) 08:18, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

See also, if you care to, the CfD at Category:Nuxálk (er, gonna have to copy-paste the accent onto that on a further edit, it's because of needing to do that I want it in the usual English form without the accent marks, same as at Sto:lo, and also Category:Cree nations, which is way lengthy now than it needs to be; and even more frustrating.....Skookum1 (talk) 08:34, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the St'at'imc one, the Sto:lo one is below it on the same log-page, the Nuxálk one above it.Skookum1 (talk) 08:57, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
