Charlotte Dujardin (born 13 July 1985) is a British dressage rider, winner of two gold medals (individual and team) at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Born in Enfield, she was educated at a comprehensive school in Bedfordshire. Starting riding as a child, her mother would buy ponies for her to ride and then sell onwards for a profit to allow Charlotte to continue her riding.[1]
Leaving school aged 16,[2][3] her parents bought her her first dressage horse from monies inherited from her grandmother's estate.[1] Offered a job as a groom by dressage rider Carl Hester, she has since been based at his yard in Newent, Gloucestershire.[2][3]
Dujardin won the Horse of the Year Show competition four times and was a winner at Hickstead on three occasions, before competing in her first dressage grand prix event in 2011.[3][4]
Offered the novice warmblood gelding Valegro by Hester and co-owner Roly Luard to develop,[1] with the later intention of the horse being riden by Hester, the combination became part of the team which won gold in a European Dressage Championship event in Rotterdam. The pair then won the FEI World Cup grand prix at London Olympia in 2011, setting a world record for the Olympic grand prix special discipline scoring 88.022%, in April 2012.[5][4][6]
Selected to represent Great Britain in the 2012 Summer Olympics,[7] in the first round they set a new Olympic record of 83.784%. On 7 August 2012 the pair were members of the team which won the gold medal in the team dressage event.[8] Two days later they won the gold in the individual dressage event with a score of 90.089%.[9][10]
