Heather Mary Stanning[1] (born 26 January 1985) is a British rower and Royal Artillery officer who won a gold medal for Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics.[2]
Early life
Stanning was born in Yeovil, Somerset, England,[1][3] and educated at Gordonstoun, Scotland. Studying sports technology at Bath University, England,[4] she started rowing in 2006 under the Team GB Start Programme.[4]
Career
Stanning was commissioned from Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst into the Royal Artillery in August 2008,[5] based at Larkhill Garrison on Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire.
After Helen Glover gained Lottery funding to enable her to give up her teaching job, she was paired with Stanning by coach Robin Williams. The pair then gave a breakthrough performance in the women's coxless pairs. For the 2010 World Cup Series, Glover and Stanning won a silver medal at the 2010 World Rowing Championships, took 9th place in Bled, 5th in Munich, but were unable to race at Lucerne due to Glover's illness.
In 2011, Glover and Stanning won the British rowing trials. They then went on to become World cup winners, winning in both Munich and Lucerne regattas (beating the 2010 world champions in the process) and achieved a further silver medal in the 2011 World Championships in Bled, Slovenia.
On 1 August 2012 Glover and Stanning won the gold medal for the women's coxless pairs at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.[2][6] This was Team GB's first gold medal of London 2012, and a first ever Olympic gold medal for British women's rowing.[2][6]
Stanning has stated that she intends to report back to Larkhill garrison in September 2012, and resume her British Army career.[4]
