Sutz-Lattrigen is a municipality in the Biel/Bienne administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

The municipality is situated on the shore of Lake Biel. In 2007, the remains of the oldest known building in Switzerland – a pile dwelling dated to 3863 BC – were discovered in the lake near Sutz-Lattrigen.[3]

Geography

Sutz-Lattrigen has an area of 3.6 km2 (1.4 sq mi). Of this area, 46.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 33.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 17.7% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (2.2%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[4]

Demographics

Sutz-Lattrigen has a population (as of 31 December 2020) of 1,399.[5] As of 2007, 6.5% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 22%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (92.4%), with French being second most common ( 4.6%) and Spanish being third ( 0.8%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 30.6% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (18.9%), the SPS (18.2%) and the Green Party (12.7%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 26.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 59.9% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.8%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Sutz-Lattrigen about 81.5% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).
