Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto (alternately titled Oh Yaro Ye India Bula Liya) is a song by Indian musician A. R. Rahman. It was the official song for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which is to be held in Delhi, India between October 3 October and 14 October 2010.[1] Released on August 28 for digital download, the much anticipated song received generally positive reception.

"Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto" was first performed by Rahman at the song release function held in Gurgaon, Haryana in Soweto on August 28, 2010. The song was dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi.[2]

Background

A. R. Rahman was chose to compose the theme song way back in 2009 itself. The Commonwealth Games Organising Committee officially signed in Rahman to compose the song in April 2010.[3] Rahman asked 15 crores as renumeration, a much big amount.[3] However, considering that all this money is basically what the common man pays as income tax, it was finalised at 5.5 crore.[3] The Group of Ministers approved the song on August 15, 2010.[2] Rahman would also be associated with the promotional events of the sporting event.

Composition

The song was composed and performed by A. R. Rahman. It was for the second time Rahman is composing for a sports event, the previous one was in 2008 for Champions League Twenty20.[4] The lyrics for the song is in Hindi with a sprinkling of English words and is penned by Mehboob, who also penned Rahman's musical wonder, Maa Tujhe Salaam.

It took nearly six months for Rahman to complete the song. Rahman, who started the work on April itself did modify the song even the day before the song release.[5]

The song release was preceded by a promotional event held at Delhi. Rahman unveiled the title of the song and sang the initial lines, Oh Yaro Ye India Bula Liya. He added that the song, though is not in the mould of Waka Waka (This Time for Africa), the theme song for 2010 FIFA World Cup, it would even excel that.[2] Rahman also informed that the song will be out within ten days. On this event, Rahman dedicated the song to Mahatma Gandhi.

The song was officially released on August 28, 2010.[6] Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi unveiled the song in the inaugural Swagatham ceremony held at Gurgaon, Haryana.[6] The release function was also precided by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda.[7] Rahman performed the song live in the event, which lasted for around five minutes.[8]
