Ipsach is a municipality in the Biel/Bienne adminstrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

Ipsach is first mentioned in 1265-66 as Ipzacho.[3]

Geography

Ipsach has an area, as of 2009, of Template:Km2 to mi2. Of this area, Template:Km2 to mi2 or 45.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while Template:Km2 to mi2 or 3.7% is forested. Of the rest of the land, Template:Km2 to mi2 or 50.3% is settled (buildings or roads) and Template:Km2 to mi2 or 0.5% is unproductive land.[4]

Demographics

Ipsach has a population (as of 31 December 2020) of 3,913.[5] As of 2007, 8.9% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 20.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (86.9%), with French being second most common ( 8.8%) and Italian being third ( 1.0%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SPS which received 26.8% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SVP (26.6%), the FDP (20%) and the Green Party (10.7%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 21.4% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 65.4% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.2%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Ipsach about 83.4% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).

Ipsach has an unemployment rate of 1.42%. As of 2005, there were 67 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 7 businesses involved in this sector. 218 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 25 businesses in this sector. 340 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 85 businesses in this sector.[6] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
