Hilterfingen is a municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

Hilterfingen is first mentioned in 1175 as Hiltolfingen.[3]

Geography

Demographics

Hilterfingen has a population (as of 31 December 2020) of 4,094.[5] As of 2007, 7.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 5.8%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (94.0%), with French being second most common ( 0.9%) and English being third ( 0.8%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 27.2% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (22.3%), the SPS (18.1%) and the Green Party (13.3%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 17.8% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 56% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 26.1%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Hilterfingen about 83.5% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).

Hilterfingen has an unemployment rate of 2.37%. As of 2005, there were 57 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 6 businesses involved in this sector. 162 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 27 businesses in this sector. 595 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 115 businesses in this sector.[6] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]

Sights

Among its attractions are the castle of Huenegg with its Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) museum and its Sailing School.
