Habkern is a municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
Origin of the name
The name Habkern comes from the Old High German word habuh ("hawk") and the ending -arra, indicating that something is in large numbers. Habkern is thus "the place where there are many hawks."
History
Habkern is first mentioned in 1275 as Habcherron.[3]

Demographics
Habkern has a population (as of 31 December 2020) of 634.[5] As of 2007[update], 3.4% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -6.7%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (98.7%), with French being second most common ( 0.2%) and English being third ( 0.2%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 68.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the local small left-wing parties (8.8%), the SPS (6.9%) and the FDP (6.1%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 24.5% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 56.6% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 18.9%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Habkern about 60.3% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).
Habkern has an unemployment rate of 0.51%. As of 2005[update], there were 179 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 61 businesses involved in this sector. 25 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 6 businesses in this sector. 61 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 14 businesses in this sector.[6]
