Bönigen is a municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

The name Bönigen ("of the people of the Bono clan") is composed of the Old High German personal name Bono and the toponymic suffix -ingun.

Bönigen belongs to the church parish of Gsteig bei Interlaken, which includes eight other nearby municipalities.

History

Bönigen is first mentioned in 1261 as villa Boningen.[3]

Bönigen lies in the Bernese Oberland at the south side of Lake Brienz. The village center lies in the northwest part of the municipality along the Lütschine up to the lake; it has nearly grown into Interlaken. The majority of the municipal area is located on the steep mountainsides, where such peaks as the Loucherhorn (Template:M to ft), the Rotflue (Template:M to ft) and the Schynige Platte are found.

Demographics

Bönigen has a population (as of 31 December 2020) of 2,569.[5] As of 2007, 5.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 5.4%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (95.6%), with English being second most common ( 0.8%) and Italian being third ( 0.7%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 38.6% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (25.7%), the FDP (11.5%) and the local small left-wing parties (8.8%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 23.7% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 57.8% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 18.5%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Bönigen about 78.2% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).

Bönigen has an unemployment rate of 1.72%. As of 2005, there were 62 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 22 businesses involved in this sector. 317 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 35 businesses in this sector. 270 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 49 businesses in this sector.[6] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
