Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (95.5%), with Serbo-croatian being second most common ( 1.0%) and Portugese being third ( 0.8%).[4] As of 2000 the gender distribution of the population was 50.9% male and 49.1% female. As of 2000 there are 1,250 households in Giswil.[5]
