Röthenbach has an area of {{km2 to mi2|36.8|abbr=on}}. Of this area, 44.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 51.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 2.9% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.6%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).<ref name=SFSO/>

The municipality is located in the Röthenbach valley and includes the core village of Röthenbach which the [[parish church]]. Also part of the municipality are the [[hamlet (place)|hamlets]] of Ober- and Niederei, and scattered farm houses. The borders also include a mountain, the {{m to ft|1546|abbr=yes}} Honegg. The municipality is divided into nine sections (''Kreise''), each of which elect one member of the town council.
