Tension is the upcoming sixteenth studio album by Australian singer Kylie Minogue. It will be released on 22 September 2023 by BMG Rights Management and Minogue's company, Darenote. It was announced in May 2023, marking Minogue's first new body of work since her 2020 disco dance-pop album, Disco. "Padam Padam" serves as the lead single of the album, with Dutch DJ and electronic music producer Oliver Heldens' single with Minogue, "10 Out of 10" also appearing on the album.

Background and production

Minogue's fifteenth studio album, Disco, released in November 2020, saw the singer return to a disco oriented sound after experimenting with country-pop in 2018's Golden.[3][4] In a 2021 BBC Radio 2 interview, Minogue teased the project, stating, "Perhaps it's going a bit more electropop. Don't quote me that [...] but that's what's on the boil at the minute."[5] In a June 2022 interview with Vogue, Minogue appeared to confirm this direction, citing her 2003 single "Slow" as a reference point for the new material.[6] The magazine also noted that recording sessions for the new album were scheduled to begin in July 2022.[6] In November 2022, Minogue told the Evening Standard that the sessions for the album had taken place in Melbourne, Brighton, London, Surrey, Croatia and Paris.[7] When talking about the upcoming album in May 2023, she stated that unlike her last two studio albums Golden and Disco, there is no theme, stating "I wanted to celebrate each song's individuality and to dive into that freedom."[8]

She enlisted the help of previous collaborators, Richard "Biff" Stannard and Duck Blackwell, to work on the album.[9]

Composition

Dutch DJ and electronic music producer Oliver Heldens (pictured) appeared on Kylie Minogue's album track "10 Out of 10".

The album will begin with "Padam Padam". Written by Ina Wroldsen and Peter Rycroft, it has been described as a "hypnotic electro" track. The track was produced by Rycroft, also known as Lostboy.[10]

"10 Out of 10", the tenth track on Tension with Dutch DJ and electronic music producer Oliver Heldens is "inspired by 80s synth-pop and disco, 90s house and 00s Eurodance, with a modern dance music twist" per Helden's own description of the track he co-wrote with Minogue and co-produced with Jackson Foote.[11]

Release and promotion

Formats

Tension is scheduled for release on 22 September 2023 by BMG Rights Management and through Minogue's company, Darenote, making it her sixteenth studio album. Minogue will release a variety of physical formats on her website's store to promote the release of the album. The standard edition includes all eleven original tracks.[12] The deluxe edition will include three additional bonus tracks: "Love Train", "Just Imagine" and "Somebody to Love". Four editions of the CD will be released: a standard edition featuring the original album cover, a standard edition featuring an alternative slipcase, a casebound book for the deluxe edition and another casebound book for the deluxe edition exclusive through Minogue's official store. Along with the standard black vinyl, five limited edition vinyl releases of Tension are also available including a gatefold silver vinyl, transparent orange, transparent pink, transparent green and coke bottle clear vinyl.[13]

Digital formats for the album such as music download and online streaming will coincide with the release of the physical formats.

Live performances

On 21 May 2023, Minogue performed "Padam Padam" on American Idol for its debut stage. The next month, she performed the song at Capital's Summertime Ball 2023.[14] On 26 July 2023, Minogue teased a Las Vegas residency, promoting of the album.[15]

Songs and singles

Prior to the album announcement, Minogue's collaboration song with Dutch DJ and electronic music producer Oliver Heldens, "10 Out of 10", was released as a promotional single on 5 April 2023 by RCA Records.[16] It peaked at number 19 on the UK Singles Downloads Chart.[17] The song will be featured on Tension as the tenth track.[18]

Through Minogue's social media accounts, she announced on 16 May 2023 the release date for the lead single, "Padam Padam",[10] to happen two days later.[2] The single premiered on 18 May 2023 on BBC Radio 2 during The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show.[19] It charted at number 19 on the ARIA Singles Chart and reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart.[20][21] The music video for the song was directed by Sophie Muller. It features Minogue in a red Mugler catsuit with a cape, with dancers dressed in red clothing.[22]
