W. H. Allen & Sons Co. Ltd were initially manufacturers of centrifugal pumps and steam engines having been founded in 1880 by Mr. William Henry Allen (1844-1926).[1] Based at York Street, Lambeth, London the company rapidly expanded and developed electric light generating machinery with Gisbert Kapp one of the eminent pioneers in this field. It was in shipbuilding the company made its reputation as a leading British manufacturer of marine auxiliary equipment for both the Royal Navy and Mercantile Marine.[1]

The Company moved to a green field site at Queens Park, Bedford in 1894 and become one of the towns major employers[2]

Steam turbine production commenced in 1908, while diesel engine manufacture began in 1908 for driving pumps and electrical generators.

Due demand in epicyclic gears for naval, other marine and wider industrial applications further capacity was required. In 1955 the Company purchased the freehold industrial premises of Messrs. Fisher Humphries and Co. Ltd., the old-established firm of agricultural engineers at Atlas Works, Pershore, Worcestershire.[3] Epicyclic gear manufacture was transferred from Bedford to Pershore in 1956.

In 1960 W. H. Allen & Sons acquired William Foster & Co. Ltd together with their subsidiary Gywynne's Pumps.[4] In 1968 the Company merged with Belliss & Morcom of Birmingham to form Amalgamated Power Engineering (APE) Ltd. in 1981 APE was acquired by Northern Engineering Industries NEI plc, based in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne.

In 1988 the pump business was sold to Weir Pumps while the steam turbine business was sold to Allen Steam Turbines in Oakley, Bedfordshire.[5]

NEI itself was then acquired by Rolls-Royce plc in 1989 and the diesel business continued at Queens Engineering Works, Bedford operating as part of the Rolls-Royce Power Engineering (RRPE) group until 2000 when the factory was closed. Allen Diesels purchased the intellectual property rights of Allen diesel engines and continue to operate from the Pilgrim Centre in Bedford.[6]

The W. H. Allen Engineering Association (WHAEA) is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the engineering company W. H. Allen & Sons Co. Ltd started in Lambeth in 1880 by William Henry Allen.[7]
