Cureggio Railway Station was a train station in homonymous town, part of the Santhià-Arona line. The station has been closed to traffic since 2012, when the line was officially suspended.

History

The station first entered service in 1905, as the first section of the line, between Santhià and Borgomanero was opened.[1].

The traffic was initially controlled via telephone, through which the "Dirigente Unico" would coordinate the maneuvers with the Station master.[citation needed]

In 1987, with the introduction of the Centralised Traffic Control, the station was equipped with electro-actuated switches, which replaced the manually operated system in place before. This system also made it possible to have centralised control through a Central Operative Director.

The maintenance of the infrastructure was originally handled by Ferrovie dello Stato, then in 2000 it was passed on to the newly created Rete Ferroviaria Italiana.[citation needed]

The station is effectively closed to traffic since the 17th of June 2012, after the indefinite suspension of the only operating line[2]

Layout and Buildings

Tracks on the Santhià side

The station is made of two parallel tracks, each with its own platform. No underpass is present, the two platforms are linked with a pedestrian Level crossing. The majority of traffic transited through the second platform, as the first was only used for giving way to other trains or for when two would cross.

The station's building was developed on two levels. It was closed to the public after the line was suspended, nevertheless as of 2023 it still looks in good shape although the exterior of the perimetral walls has been thoroughly graffited and vandalised.[according to whom?]

To help in case of bad weather, a concrete sidewalk was built, with two ticket validator machines and info panels for the travellers.[when?]

It is still sometimes used by RFI to store Work trains used for renovation work on the Novara-Domodossola line.[citation needed]

The station was regularly served by regional Trenitalia trains until 17 June 2012, when the only operating line of the station was suspended by the Piedmont Region because of financial issues.

As of 2023 the station is set to be reopened by 2025.[citation needed]
