I don't believe that there's any difference in procedural requirements between changing the name of a town and a district. Unsurprisingly, https://faizabad.nic.in/ continues to use Faizabad district unlike Prayagraj district at https://allahabad.nic.in/. Then there's the issue of common name. Edit: UP government has officially updated the name of the district and now the name Ayodhya is in official use^[1]

The official website you mentioned above has now changed name of district from faizabad to Ayodhya, however url of the website is still the same...Since the name of distict is Ayodhya....so, either name of this page should be changed or it can be redirected to Ayodhya district page...thanks Thekkverma (talk) 10:19, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As explained above, we do NOT use the "official" name, we use the WP:COMMONNAME in English, which is Faizabad.

Common name is wrong, no one know faizabad, where as bangalore madras are all india known, looks like some mischievous attempt to not reflect changed name. This is the English Wikipedia, and our articles are based on the common name in English as per the article title, not the official name. This name should be used throughout the article, other than a brief mention of the official name.

Till now the name of this page was not being changed citing reasons that official URL of website district is still the old one. Now Faizabad district has been officially renamed as Ayodhya district and it has been approved by government of Uttar Pradesh. I do not think anybody has cited the URL as a reason for Faizabad district being the best name to use. You are arguing against a straw man.

Ayodhya is district name and Ayodhya is district headquarters of ayodhya district. Your should change name as Ayodhya district because Ayodhya is birth place of ShreeRam ,and people know mostly ayodhya. Everyone not know Faizabad name but ayodhya known everyone in world. 1a) Google basic search with quotes "faizabad district" yields 1,30,000 hits and for "ayodhya district" it yields 38,400 hits

1b) Google 'news' search with "faizabad district" in the 'news tab' result 2,170 hit for it and for "ayodhya district" it gets 1,120 hits.

2) There are many news agency articles (latest) using the term Faizabad district. Examples Business Today, Business Standard, News 18 Wire for example.

3) The Google trends above only shows hits from India, so it is not an 'Worldwide' view, as it is required for the name change of an article. Not to mention, there is not a notable difference when the usage of both the terms are concerned except a spike in first week of August 2020. In my opinion there is still time. Also according to this excerpt from WP:NAMECHANGES → If, on the other hand, reliable sources written after the name change is announced continue to use the established name, Wikipedia should continue to do so as well, as described above in "Use commonly recognizable names".
