Official status of name change

I don't believe that there's any difference in procedural requirements between changing the name of a town and a district. Unsurprisingly, https://faizabad.nic.in/ continues to use Faizabad district unlike Prayagraj district at https://allahabad.nic.in/. Then there's the issue of common name. So let's hold our horses here. Thanks.—Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 14:48, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Edit: UP government has officially updated the name of the district and now the name Ayodhya is in official use[1]

Please change name Avaidyamishra (talk) 11:19, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please read my message above as well as WP:COMMONNAME. Thanks.—Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 11:20, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The official website you mentioned above has now changed name of district from faizabad to Ayodhya, however url of the website is still the same...Since the name of distict is Ayodhya....so, either name of this page should be changed or it can be redirected to Ayodhya district page...thanks Thekkverma (talk) 10:19, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Edit: Now the official URL of UP government has been updated[2]

As explained above, we do NOT use the "official" name, we use the WP:COMMONNAME in English, which is Faizabad.
As a comparison, we still have an article on Bangalore, NOT Bengaluru, despite the name changing "officially" in 2006. - Arjayay (talk) 11:55, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Common name is wrong, no one know faizabad, where as bangalore madras are all india known, looks like some mischievous attempt to not reflect changed name. Given only a single example of Bangalore is highly inadequate, as it only means a small change in way of pronunciation while as Ayodhya is a complete name change like in case of CHENNAI. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 223.186.153.71 (talk) 15:09, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like Leftist bias in not renaming this district,no one knows faizabad in world over, its ayodhya they know, it is really shameful that ideological orientation is making people get wrong information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2401:4900:3315:14C4:E145:B0F2:BACA:B181 (talk) 07:15, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has its own set of rules. Name changes happen only when reliable independent third party English sources start addressing the new name. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:11, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Edit notice

An edit notice has been added to the article due to repeated changes to the name, contrary to COMMONNAME. Expiry: 24-Aug-2020. Mathglot (talk) 03:02, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Name is Incorrect

Currently Name of the District is Ayodhya as well as Name of division is also Ayodhya S.P.Verma (talk) 19:51, 17 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is the English Wikipedia, and our articles are based on the common name in English as per the article title, not the official name. This name should be used throughout the article, other than a brief mention of the official name.
We may, eventually, change the name, as we did at Mumbai, after about 10 years, but other articles, such as Bangalore are still under their "English" names, as this is what English readers recognize. - Thank you - Arjayay (talk) 20:05, 17 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Name Should be changed to AYODHYA DISTRICT

since the official name has been changed from faizabad to ayodhya as well as the district magistrate and headquarters has also shifted to ayodhya ,the name of this page should be changed accordingly or should be redirected to AYODHYA DISTRICT page . the mentioned official link is also officially updated to the new name by the government of uttar pradesh. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.255.251.226 (talk) 07:29, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, WP:COMMONNAME applies. Check it. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 12:53, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It has always been commonly recognised as Ayodhya. So according to WP:COMMONNAME also it should be changed. HRH Bhanu (talk) 17:18, 12 April 2020 (UTC) Note this edit was actually by HRH Raj (talk)[1][reply]

And your reliable source for this claim is? - Arjayay (talk) 17:41, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The name of the district has changed but you're still not changing it.This is disgusting. Ayodhya is largely recognisable, so changing the title of the article to Ayodhya district in accordance to WP:COMMONNAME shouldn't be a problem. Andiefreude19 (talk) 09:01, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Are you the same person as HRH Raj and IP 27.255.251.226?-- Toddy1 (talk) 10:08, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Updating the official name of the district

Till now the name of this page was not being changed citing reasons that official URL of website district is still the old one. Now Faizabad district has been officially renamed as Ayodhya district and it has been approved by government of Uttar Pradesh. The URL of official website of the district has also been changed [1]. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lazyboyanmol (talkcontribs) 09:03, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I do not think anybody has cited the URL as a reason for Faizabad district being the best name to use. You are arguing against a straw man.
Consensus is that the district and the division are called Faizabad, as per WP:COMMONNAME.-- Toddy1 (talk) 10:09, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Official name of faizabad is ayodhya.proof are papers.

Much more famous name too is ayodhya.ayodhya verdict, ayodhya dispute, ayodhya temple and main officialy its

Ayodhya district now. Bubbleinocean (talk) 11:46, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also todd1 had cited the url wen it was faizabad.nic.in now its renamed as ayodhya.nic.in so now you accept its ayodhya district.there is nothing like faizabad district.until and unless you want to make wikipedia a waste of information by writing fake details. Bubbleinocean (talk) 11:49, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Change title to Ayodhya district

Ayodhya is district name and Ayodhya is district headquarters of ayodhya district. Your should change name as Ayodhya district because Ayodhya is birth place of ShreeRam ,and people know mostly ayodhya. Everyone not know Faizabad name but ayodhya known everyone in world. Nov 2018 when district name change so you must change title of Wikipedia as write as Ayodhya District. Anurag S Tiwari (talk) 23:20, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Anurag S Tiwari, please read the large number of discussions about exactly this above your comment. Ravensfire (talk) 23:49, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 6 March 2021

Faizabad districtAyodhya district – Requested under WP:NAMECHANGES Google Trends clearly show Ayodhya district is used far more than the former name: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=IN&q=Ayodhya%20district,Faizabad%20district As others have mentioned, officially renamed: https://ayodhya.nic.in/, https://m.economictimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/up-cabinet-approves-renaming-of-faizabad-as-ayodhya-allahabad-as-prayagraj/articleshow/66604547.cms

As under WP:NAMECHANGES when the name is changed, "we give extra weight to reliable sources written after the name change. If the reliable sources written after the change is announced routinely use the new name, Wikipedia should follow suit and change relevant titles to match," here are some examples of usage of Ayodhya district (alone and in conjuction, such as "Ayodhya District Administration" by various news sources:
