Summary

Description
English: Timur the Great's imprisonment of the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I
  • manuscript on paper, 18.7 x 13.5 cm, before 1561
  • the sultan tied by his waist with a golden rope to Timur's table
  • His wife Olivera Despina is naked except for a cloak draped around her shoulders, serving food at Timur's banquet.
  • the sultan bound and on all fours being used as a mounting-block by Timur, and similarly bound in his gilded cage
Such reports of mistreatment may have been fanciful, since contemporary witnesses attest that Bayezid was treated courteously as a prisoner of war.
