Summary

Description
English: The Mackenzie river is the second longest river in North America, and its tributaries, the smaller rivers that connect to it, run through a fifth of Canada. The river originates in Great Slave Lake and flows 1,738 kilometres into the Mackenzie Delta and the Arctic Ocean. About 7 per cent of the freshwater flowing into the Arctic Ocean each year stems from the Mackenzie and its delta: The water flow reaches its maximum in spring and summer as the waters carry sediments and nutrients into the seas, and ends with the formation of sea ice towards autumn and winter in the Arctic Ocean. This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 17 October 2020, shows a rare cloud-free image of the Mackenzie River Delta at the beginning of the winter refreezing process. Highly detailed data acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel satellites are used to detect changes in land surfaces at northern latitudes.
