English: Professor Tiruppattur Venkatachalamurti Ramakrishnan also known as T. V. Ramakrishnan (born 14 August 1941) is known for his work in Condensed Matter Physics. He completed his B.Sc (Honours) in 1959 and M.Sc (Physics) in 1961 from Banaras Hindu University, followed by a Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University, New York in 1966.
His career spanning more than four decades.He has been Visiting Professor, Princeton University; Consultant, AT&T Bell Laboratories; Visiting Professor, Indian Institute of Science; Coordinator, Research Programme on Disorder, Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of California; INSA Srinivasa Ramanujan Research Professor; Rothschild Visiting Professor, Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences and Visiting Fellow Commoner, Trinity College, Cambridge University. Professor Ramakrishnan is currently Honorary Professor at Jawahar Lal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research; Honorary Distinguished Professor, IIT Kanpur, Honorary Fellow, TIFR, Mumbai; Distinguished Associate, Centre for Condensed Matter Theory, Indian Institute of Science; DAE Homi Bhabha Professor and Emeritus Professor, Banaras Hindu University.
Professor Ramakrishnan is the recipient of the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award for Physical Sciences, Third World Academy of Sciences Award, C.V. Raman Centenary Medal, Meghnad Saha Medal, Distinguished Materials Scientist of the Year Award and Trieste Science Prize. He was awarded 'Padma Sri' in 2001.
His abiding area of research interest is the quantum physics of many electron systems. He has made a number of significant contributions of long lasting value in this area in addition to the theory of weak localization.
Professor Ramakrishnan is the Chairman, Governing Board, Nuclear Science Centre, New Delhi; Member, Union of Concerned Scientists, Cambridge, MA, USA and Member, Science Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.
His stellar Contributions to his chosen area of research include 120 research papers, 3 books and 15 review articles. In recent years Professor Ramakrishnan is spearheading the movement for ensuring equitable and broad based higher education without compromising on quality especially in Science and in Indian Universities.
