Description
English: Ottery St Mary Church, Devon, mural monuiment. "In a vault near this place Lye the Bodies of Anne the Relict of Hugh Vaughan late of this Parish Esquire, (whose Body lyes in this Church) And of Laetitia his (sic) sister Relict of Richard Carew late of Barley (near Exeter) Esqr...."

For the inscription and armorials to make sense it should read "... and of Laetitia her sister".

The arms shown are:

  • Left: Or, three lions passant in pale sable (Carew) impaling Argent, an eagle displayed with two heads gules over all a chevron or on a canton of the last a chaplet sable (Goodall, apparently a variant of the arms granted 1 March 1612 to Goodall of Earlstonham, Suffolk: Gules, an eagle displayed argent armed or on a canton of the second a chaplet graminy vert[1])
  • Centre: Gules, three boar's heads erased argent (Vaughan of Devon ( Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry, 15th Edition, ed. Pirie-Gordon, H., London, 1937, pp.2324-6)) with double impalement, dexter: Or, on a fess wavy sable three lozenges of the field (Duck of Exeter, for the 1st wife of Hugh Vaughan); sinister: Goodall, 2nd wife and widow of Hugh Vaughan
  • Right: Vaughan impaling Goodall
The ancestor of this Hugh Vaughan was Hugh Vaughan (d.1606), the first to assume that surname, son of Howell ap David of Wales and steward to Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford, KG (c.1527-1585), of Bedford House, Exeter. (BLG, 1937, p.2325, corrected from "3rd Earl"). The eldest son of Hugh Vaughan (d.1606) was Charles Vaughan of Ottery St Mary, Devon.
