English: First page of the autograph manuscript of Claude Debussy's « La Plus que lente », a piece for solo piano composed in 1910. According to Maurice Dumesnil, it was intended for Leoni, solo violinist of the orchestra of the Hotel Carlton in Paris. The score was published by Durand in July 1910; and it was also published, under the title Valse inédite, in the August 27, 1910 issue of « Le Figaro ». The tempo indication molto rubato con morbidezza (very free, with gentleness) nuances the slowness evoked in the main title. Debussy was rather referring to the genre of the slow waltz (also called English waltz), which appeared at the beginning of the 19th century. That same year, 1910, the piece was transcribed by Léon Roques for piano four hands, and for piano and violin. The piece was premiered on March 31, 1911 at the circle La Française by Mrs. Delage-Prat. Then, in 1912, it was orchestrated by Debussy himself, with two cadenzas to choose from: one for flute and another one for cimbalom.
The Hotel Carlton was later called Hotel Rochechouart.
