Other information

In 1521 Albrecht Dürer drew a group of Irish Warriors (three Galloglass and two Kerns. This is a part of that fantastic drawing of these five soldiers of the 16th century and how they dressed and carried themselves. At left is an Irish gallóglach (Gallowglass), who is carrying his claidheamh mhòr (great sword), followed by two bare foot kern (gaelic warriors) carrying pole axes and a cow horn trumpet. The kern would have always accompanied the more elite mercenaries to assist them with their weapons and gear. The original illustration has two more Gallowglass to the left, one with a great sword and spear and the other with bow and arrows. This is before the Ireland's Gaelic kingdoms were fully colonized!
