Summary

Description
English: Fires speckled the landscape of Angola in mid-June 2018.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the fires (red hot spots) and gray smoke on June 22.

The dry season in Angola – and across southern Africa’s tropical savannas – brings widespread fire each year. People set fire for agricultural use during this time, with the aim to clear brush, pasture, to prepare fields for new crops and also to drive game. In Angola, burning often begins sometime in May and becomes more widespread through mid-year before beginning to lighten in September.

An extremely dry season after years of drought has created tinder-box-like conditions in parts of Angola. Lack of water has brought significant food insecurity in many parts of the country, leaving many people in subsistence conditions. The combination of need to use fire for cropping and dry conditions makes this a very active fire season. According to Global Forest Watch, between June 14 and June 21 there were 63,313 fire alerts reported in Angola – a country slightly less than twice the size of the state of Texas in the United States.
