English: If a diode goes open-circuit in a standard x/y diode array, there is no route for current to pass from the positive terminal to the negative terminal. With a partially, or fully "Charlieplexed" array, however, other routes are available. If D1 goes open-circuit in the partially "Charlieplexed" array shown, current can pass from positive to negative through 3 diodes in series, D2, D3 and D4. Other routes are also available. If these diodes are LEDS, and the voltage is high enough, this could cause unexpected lighting effects .
