Her main research topics, investigated through books, documentaries and interviews, are the testimony of Holocaust and female resistance to regimes, from Argentina to Rwanda.

In 2003 she published the book Come una rana d'inverno (Like a frog in winter) for Bompiani, centered on the testimony of Goti Herskovits Bauer, Liliana Segre and Giuliana Fiorentino Tedeschi, one of the major Italian witnesses to the Holocaust. The volume, which has become a long seller, has seen numerous reprints and a new edition in 2018. In 2019 it was published in Spain under the title Como una rana en invierno. Tres mujeres en Auschwitz][1].

On the same subject, in 2007 Padoan made the documentary La Shoah delle donne (The Holocaust of women) for Rai 3[2] and in 2008 the documentary Dalle leggi razziali alla Shoah (From racial laws to the Shoah) (for the broadcast La grande storia (The great story). To the difficult testimonial position - between sanctification and denial - she dedicated the volume Il paradosso del testimone (The witness paradox), a number of the Rivista di estetica (Aesthetics magazine)[3] (n. 45, year 3/2010 L, Rosenberg & Sellier) which collects essays by Aharon Appelfeld, Ruth Klüger, Hanna Kugler Weiss, one of the most important witnesses of the Holocaust.

To the testimony he also dedicated the essay La costruzione della testimonianza tra storia e letteratura (The construction of testimony between history and literature), collected in the volume Essere donne nei lager (Being women in the concentration camps'', edited by A. Chiappano, Giuntina, 2009).

In 2004 she published, again for Bompiani, Le pazze. Un incontro con le Madri di Plaza de Mayo (The crazy ones. A meeting with the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo), a multi-voiced story told by the founders of the historic association who, in search of their children desaparecidos, they faced one of the most ferocious dictatorships of the twentieth century. Il libro ha vinto il Premio Martoglio per il giornalismo 2005[4] e il Premio Nonino 2006[5].

On the mothers of the desaparecidos, in 2002 Padoan made The square of the Mothers with the white handkerchief , a video interview with Hebe de Bonafini, president of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, directed by Dario Barezzi, and in 2006 she shot, in Argentina, The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, broadcast for Rai3, again as part of the review Doc3-Author documentary[6].

In 2006, for Rai News 24, Padoan made the reportage Via Lecco, 9, centered on the story of a group of political refugees from the Horn of Africa.

In the field of literary and film criticism Padoan has published Ermanno Olmi. The sentiment of reality, a book-interview with the master of cinema (Editrice San Raffaele 2008) and the volume Between writing and freedom. The speeches of the Nobel Prize for Literature (Editrice San Raffaele 2010), a collection of the most political and testimonial speeches of Nobel-winning writers, from Imre Kertész to Josif Brodskij, from Gao Xingjian to Wole Soyinka, in a fresco that focuses on what many have called the "century of the fields", from lager to gulag, from Chinese re-education camps to apartheid jails. The volume, in an updated version, was republished by Bompiani in 2018[7] with the title For the love of the world. The political speeches of the Nobel Prize winners for literature[8]

Returning to the theme of the cultural roots of racism, Padoan wrote with Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza - one of the most authoritative scholars in the field of population genetics and human migration - the book Racism and noism. The declinations of us and the exclusion of the other[9].

Daniela Padoan wrote numerous reviews of books, articles and interviews for the newspaper il Manifesto and for the feminist magazine Via Dogana, and collaborated with Radio 1 Rai conducting live broadcasts with studio guests and writing variety lyrics and radio plays. For television, she participated in the production of broadcasts for Rai Educational, including The school live.

In the field of children's literature, Padoan has published the volumes Miti e leggende del mondo antico (Myths and legends of the ancient world, Sansoni 1996), Miti e leggende dei popoli del mondo' (Myths and legends of the peoples of the world , Sansoni 1998), and Tottoi e i delfini (Tottoi and the dolphins), with he father Gianni Padoan (Giunti 1996).

Padoan collaborated with the Enciclopedia Treccani, taking care in particular of the article about the Italian writers born in other countries[10], and to the Encyclopedia of Women, editing the entry on Liliana Segre[11].

She has collaborated on "Saturno", the cultural insert of Fatto Quotidiano, and has a blog on "Fatto Quotidiano on line".

In 2020 she edited the volume Niente di questo mondo ci risulta indifferente (Nothing in this world is indifferent to us), by Interno4 Edizioni[12], outcome of a process promoted by the "Laudato Si" association which involved more than two hundred scholars, activists and associations in a discussion on the encyclical[13] by Pope Francis, in order to promote an alliance for the climate, the Earth and social justice (review by Luigi Manconi[14]).

Activism

In 2014 she was a candidate in the European elections in the list The Other Europe with Tsipras, a coalition of parties and associations that supported the candidacy of the leader of SYRIZA Alexīs Tsipras at the Presidency of the European Commission.

Since July of the same year she has been the spokesperson in Italy for the MEP Barbara Spinelli, with whom she has worked in particular on the issues of rights, civil liberties and migration. In April 2019 she is nominated in the European elections with the "La Sinistra" list.

She is the president of the association Laudato si' - An alliance for the climate, the Earth and social justice[15] and is one of the founding members of the ADIF association - Rights and borders[16].
