Brodell says Kaúxuma left an initial marriage to a Canadian servant "in which she was essentially a slave wife", returned to the Kutenai, and announced that the man had changed [her] sex, either magically (per Brodell) or surgically per Roscoe); Kaúxuma thereafter adopted men's clothing and weapons and took a wife.
Kaúxuma may have assisted in the transmission of prophetic teachings, and Christian influences, between Plateau and Athapaskan tribes. ref name="Irwin"/
