This is a great list for folks looking for something to do (or write about). Would it be OK if I added small photos from existing articles to the appropriate sections in order to color things up a bit? I'd do so on the right-side and without breaking up the flow of the existing list. Thoughts? Rklawton 21:08, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm sure the photos will be fine, but don't add ones from New York City or Minneapolis to the Champaign county section. I assume there are many Stone Arch Bridges, but the one in Champaign doesn't cross the Mississippi River. --Dual Freq 11:10, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

While reviewing this list historic places in search of suitable illustrations, I've found a few dozen links that don't relate directly to the referenced historic place. When I've found these links, I've gone ahead and changed the link to make it location-specific. It's my impression that each of these places deserves its own article. On a side note, it might be nice at some point to include information from the place's original application. At any rate, this is the reason for all the link changes. It doesn't make sense to have a link to an Illinois historic site take a visitor to an article about a site in a different state or country. Rklawton 03:18, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

That's not exactly the original application, but it's better than nothing. I'd still like the application if it's available. On a related note, would it make sense to provide county-specific links under each county heading - in order to make finding this information easier? See the first listing (Adams County) for an example. I also added this link to the Adams County, Illinois article under external links. Thoughts? Rklawton 08:54, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/research/ Multiple property nomination contexts and GSA properties have been digitized and are now available through the NRIS database. There are a few pages of Illinois multiple property records under Covers by State. For those not scanned in, you would probably have to order specific applications from the National Park Service and have them mailed to you. As for linking all counties, I'd say put one link to the main Illinois page at the bottom of the list and people can navigate to a specific county using the website's system. Additionally, I don't know who runs the .com webpage, but I don't think it is run by the government and may not be up to date / accurate. --Dual Freq 14:25, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Should we make an effort to list these sites in the appropritae city, state articles, too? It should be a snap for the short city articles. It'll require more care and attention with the larger ones. By doing this, we may even find sites that already have articles (I already found one tonight). Thoughts? Rklawton 07:05, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

I've completed Adams county as per my proposal above. I did this to solicit comment by way of example. Note that Quincy is a pretty big city. It has a separate article for historic locations, and that's were I put the national registry information. I did what I could to merge with existing information, but I had to leave a note on the Talk page requesting help with Quincy's historic districts - they have several and I didn't know which went where. Here's a list of counties where I have not yet added a section of Registered historic places to each city that has one (or more). It'll take awhile to go through all the counties, so I thought it might be best to start a todo list. If you want to help, be sure to remove the county from this list when you finish it. ToDo List

• Brilliant project (and only 86,000 more entries to go, overall). Putting the red and blue links on the county pages is a great way to generate interest in creating or contributing to articles. The contents of all these lists were dumped from the NRHP database and simply enclosed in wikilinks, so there are thousands of DABs for the "main post office" and banks with the same name, etc. People have been steadily chipping away and DABbing at the lists, though. I've been tinking of starting a Poratl:Historic places or similar, as a forum for all the articles. More research required to make the portal international, to draw the largest audience. Need to find equivalent organizations in other countries (ie: Architectural conservation, Victorian Heritage Register, Cultural heritage).   • Thoughts... only that it sounds like you've got a great idea. Hmmm... I'll tell you what, I've got accounts on 30 other languages (not counting Simple English). If you create a standard, clear message outlining what you would like in order to internationalize this project (be sure to include links back to our examples here), I'll see what I can do about posting your note at the various English language embassies at these sites and see what turns up. Some are more active than others, and I have a hard time using the right-to-left interfaces (Hebrew, Arabic), but even a few takers would make a great start. Rklawton 04:54, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Speaking of Simple English, I noticed the Simple English wiki doesn't have a National Register of Historic Places article. If you get bored, you might want to dust off your sixth grade vocabulary and see what you might accomplish there as well. Rklawton 04:59, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

There appear to be several of these with some combination of Chicago + Burlington + Quincy. Some have the word and, others only the ampersand (&). Just a friendly potential disambiguation FYI. --Ebyabe 22:15, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Just so the rest of you know, it's always a good idea to find out if any of these historic stations still operate as Amtrak, Metra, and other existing railroad stations. I just found out that Deerfield (Metra) was an NRHP station a few minutes ago(http://www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com/IL/Lake/state.html). The situation as I see it is much like the situation with White Pines Forest State Park. There is a park, seen at the previous link, and then there is White Pines State Park Lodge and Cabins. The lodge and cabins have a separate, albeit connected, history. In this case, a Civilian Conservation Corps project in 1933. One can only assume that the Starved Rock Lodge and Cabins and Starved Rock State Park are similiar. As well, the listing on the Register is for the Lodge and Cabins, not the entire park. Though, Starved Rock itself is listed individually on the Register.

The fact that Starved Rock, the actual mass of stone called Starved Rock, is listed individually makes me wonder if the rock itself should have a separate article from the State Park. Or at least a section in the park's article. What do you folks think?A mcmurray 06:34, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
