To sum up what I've done to this page over the last day or so, I've changed all the images representing the services and tools to be the ones from the Google More page and I've reorganized everything into Services, Tools, Programs, and Downloads.

Hi, there was a subsection under Google Web Search called Google Features that was a direct copy-paste from Google's site. I've included the first and last entry from that list below, or you can see what I removed in this diff.

Blurbs on the most useful tools in Google Web Search might be worthwhile, if someone wants to write them.

It was only around for a very short time. It isn't really a service or tool. It's more history. Perhaps add it to an exsisting section or maybe a blurb in the corporate culture section. BrokenSegue 03:59, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

There are too many of them, and they're all over the article. I think it would be a good idea to

• replace external links for services that have their own article with
  "See also:"
• organise the rest of external links to get them out of the article text flow, maybe have little boxes with image, launch date (optionally) and link (optionally, and not necessarily external) for every service.

The article doesn't mention the fact google maps currently does covers the world, albeit in less detail than America and the UK etc. It should also mention something about the satellite imagery covering the world. I'd write it, but I'm just not in the mood today :/

This would be more suitably asked on the Satellite_imagery page since it's not specifically a Google issue, but I thought I might have more of a chance of getting an answer here. Anyway, many people have mentioned that many government buildings are blurred out or obscured on satellite images. Anyone know why? Am I the only one seeing a glitch at Google Images (the site, not the article section)? Half-way through each page, each image is stated as having dimensions of "-1" by "-1". -WindFish 03:18, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

Tthe new version of Google Groups is much more advanced than the last, letting you more easily join a group, make a group, and track your favorite topics

AFAIK it was not possible to join or create groups with the original interface (which gave only access to Usenet groups, the google.* hierarchy and some technical mailing lists; it had no mail2news and no private group, so it was not necessary to "join" anything.) Now the URL is simply groups.google.com, and groups-beta.google.com redirects here as well.

I think it would be nice to see a list of Google Domains, SubDomains, Hostnames, and what they are used for. This should not be limited to client access perspective (us to them via http/https), but should also include anything we learn of them. This could be included into each subsection to link to and from this existing article.

For some reason there is an article about Google Suggest in Japanese -- except that Google Suggest (in English) is not mentioned outside this article. I feel that there should be a merger, or at least a mention that Google Suggest also has a Japanese version. Nobody has merged it for over 2 months. Where could it be merged to? I think the Japanese article is too small to care about, and that it is fairly sensible and obvious that Google Suggest is available in Japanese (Google is localized worldwide and localization is not that hard). I have added a {{db}} tag for speedy deletion under WP:CSD category 1; if you disagree, feel free to Wikipedia:revert my changes to prevent deletion, but I reiterate, it's too small to really care about OR take to WP:AfD OR merge. --unforgettableid | talk to me 22:16, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

This is incorrect, Google Maps is the javascript map system that runs on Google Local (and other Google Services such as Ride Finder). The summary under services now reads Google Maps API. Mporcheron 15:29, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

• Support the splitting of this page - it takes too long to load, is too confusing (look at the table of contents!). Everything should be made into a new article, but a short summary and logo of each individual item should remain on this page, with a link to the main article. • Oppose split. This is a "List of Google services and tools." Breaking it apart defeats the purpose of it being a list. The problem is that it has been turned into a quasi-comprehensive article. It could be shortened by reformatting it to a more typical list structure while maintaining the links to the main articles. Sections without corresponding articles could be used to start new articles, at least as stubs. Technically, that's not "splitting" this article or turning it into a disambig page, but it (IMHO) serves the purposes of splitting it. :-) A subpage could be created here while the restructured list is being drafted. Split and summarize. I just think that a short summary of each (and the logo) should remain on this page, so it is still a list, but everything else moved to separate pages. "Splitting" does not address the issues that this is a list article. If you want a narrative-style article, a new one probably should be created with a name something like Google services and tools. I Still (But I already Voted earlier) Oppose Split because This article is great. However I do not object to creating a separate Page that Solely serves as a split page. This article has It's Purpose and Splitting it would serve a different service. We can Benefit from both services by having a different page that Solely lists and keeping this page. Just another idea; perhaps we leave everything on the page, but we just link to the separate pages and have a one sentence summary. e.x. GMail - GMail is an e-mail service offered by Google with an unheard of 2 GB of storage space. (see GMail) -AtionSong 13:55, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

I've just thought we really need to seperate the Downloads and Features section from this list. It's called services and tools and that's what it should be. I think we should create an article (List of Google downloads and (using draft 1.2 format) create a list. It would definitely be a service - features are the cool things Google does from the search bar (e.g., searching a zip code brings up weather, searching an address brings up a map, searching a tracking # brings up FedEx/UPS/something else, etc.). After reading Rfrisbie's comment I have to agree. I have redesigned your table slightly (see Talk:List of Google services and tools/Draft 1.1). I have basically removed the logo column and changed some of the links. Martin Porcheron 18:17, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm fine with most of the changes in Draft 1.1 except for removing the wikilinks in the Service column and adding them to the "More information" wikilinks. Common practice is to link the terms in a list, which is the Service column in this case. "More information" is hard to tell what it's about, or whether it's a wikilink or external link, if you're unfamiliar with the display differrences. Are you willing to make that revision to D1.1 or should I start D1.2? Rfrisbie^talk 19:54, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Google Labs consists of all of Google's experimental technologies. Google Labs is akin to a directory page that links to all Google technologies under development or in beta that have not yet been made widely available. (Emphasis mine)

I am building a minimalistic but comprehensive list of Google products and services (intended to be more complete than the specific article). It can be found at User:Tacvek/Google. Noticing the argument about splitting this article, I decided to make my own contribution to the discussion. However, since the current discussion is so cluttered, I decided to start a new "thread."

Most lists on Wikipedia include a description of each entry along with a Main Article link. So far, that seems to be what we have here. Why not create separate pages for the entries that lack them. The description on this page would be kept and would link to the new page.

Also, it would look much better if the external links to each service were only on their page opposed to their description. Foxjwill 20:16, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Google Pack, announced at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show on 6 January 2006, bundles Google (Google Earth, Google Talk, Google Desktop, etc.) and non-Google software (such as Adobe Reader, Norton Antivirus and Trillian) into a single setup.

In December 2003, Google launched the beta version of the Google Deskbar, a search tool which runs from the Microsoft Windows taskbar, without a browser having to be open. It can return film reviews, stock quotes, dictionary and thesaurus definitions, plus any pre-configured search of a third-party site (e.g. eBay or Amazon). In November 2004, Google launched an API for Google Deskbar.

Google Desktop enables desktop search. It runs locally on a PC and will index all Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape Mail, and Thunderbird emails, text documents, Microsoft Office documents, AOL Instant Messenger conversations, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, and Netscape history on that PC, PDF, music, images, video, and allow the user to search them from a browser.

Google Desktop 2 (beta) was released on August 22, 2005. The new feature that distinguishes Desktop 2 from Desktop is the addition of Sidebar which is placed on either side of your Windows desktop and can display real-time news, e-mail, photos, stocks, and weather, among others.

On June 28, 2005, Google made available Google Earth as a downloadable program for free. It uses Keyhole technology to allow customized use of Google Maps, with e.g. map images with town and street names overlaying satellite images. For some areas these overlays are available even though Google Maps by itself does not provide these.

On July 13, 2004 Google acquired Picasa, software for management and sharing of digital photographs. Since then, Google has released the latest edition of the software with Picasa2. The aim of the software was to make photo editing simple and easy to use. Picasa has also been integrated with Google's Blogger and Gmail services. It is free to download.

On August 24, 2005, a beta version of Talk was released. It is an instant messaging service, utilizing the Jabber protocol. Talk also includes a voice over ip service.

On February 7, 2006, Google announced they are currently adding Talk support into Gmail. This allows you to send instant messages to other talk users directly from your gmail inbox. Many users already have access to this update and the integration is slowly being rolled over for those who don't.

Google Toolbar is a toolbar featuring a Google search bar, as well as other Google tools. As of July 2005, Google Toolbar is available for two browsers, four operating systems and in ten languages.

This addition to Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later adds Google's searching capabilities in a toolbar in the web browser. The latest version includes pop-up ads blocking, automatic filling of forms, the ability to show the Google PageRank value for the current page being viewed, and spell checker, AutoLink and the Word Translator. It has been criticized for being a security risk because it updates itself without user intervention.

A separately downloadable add-on for the toolbar allowed participation in Google Compute, a distributed computing project to help scientific research. This add-on is currently not available.

Other browsers, such as Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Safari, have built-in search tools that offer the same functionality. Recently, Google also launched a new version of the toolbar, "Google Toolbar for Firefox", which functions similarly to its Internet Explorer counterpart, except it has exclusive Firefox-only features. There is also the well established Googlebar extension, which although not developed by Google directly offers very similar functionality to the official Google Toolbar.

In January 2006 Google released the beta version of its new toolbar, "Google Toolbar Beta", for Windows XP/2000 & IE 6.0+ which allows users to get instant search suggestions; share web pages with friends; enjoy the Toolbar's pop-up blocker, web form filler, and spellchecker; add bookmarks; and add custom buttons. The about dialog box for Google Toolbar has the Latin words "de parvis grandis acervus erit". Which can be translated as "From the small things there will arise plenty of great ones." Ovid, in Remedia Amoris used a similar phrase "de multis grandis acervus erit", translated as "Out of many things a great heap will be formed."

Web Accelerator

   Main article: Google Web Accelerator

On May 3,2005, Google launched a downloadable web accelerator known as Google Web Accelerator. It can be integrated into Mozilla Firefox (taking the form of two new toolbar items) and Microsoft Internet Explorer (taking the form of a new toolbar), but it is also usable in a limited capacity with any web browser simply by setting the browser's proxy server to localhost:9100. It speeds up web browsing through the use of this local proxy server, which sends requests to Google's Web Accelerator servers to help get a faster response. The data between the local proxy and the accelerator servers is compressed to decrease transfer time. The Google Web Accelerator also uses caching and prefetching. Prefetching can be disabled.

However, there was recent controversy over the Accelerator as some users found that their personal website cookies were being shared to other users. This meant that some users found pages such as forum control panels of other users containing personal information appearing and that it was possible to spoof post as those other users. Secure websites were unaffected as the Accelerator did not scan sites protected by https.

It is thought this was the reason that downloads of the Google Accelerator software were disabled, however there were also technical issues with it following links that could cancel or delete website data. The prefetching option would potentially prefetch links such as "delete" or "log out", causing data loss and access problems. Google's servers also quickly reached their maximum capacity due to the widespread use of Accelerator: this is the reason Google officially cited on the Accelerator website.

It should be also mentioned that some have downloaded google's web accelerator and have noticed it only SLOWED DOWN thier webpage load time, this was noted especially among comcast.net broadband internet users.

I think this article should be organised into headings. I have devised a possible solution to the headings' hierarchy, and it should be ok to implement it. However, due to it being such a radical change, I think it should be discussed, along with other possible ways of improving the article.

Here is the structure I have created (along with examples of heading content):

1. Advertising: AdWords, AdSense, Click-to-Call
2. Applications: Earth, Picasa, Browser Tools
3. Office Suite: Spreadsheets, Writely, Calendar
4. Social: Gmail, Orkut, Talk
5. Web Development: Analytics, Code, Sitemaps
6. Web Searching:
   1. Analysis (zeitgeist, trends)
   2. Maps (maps, ride finder, transit)
   3. Subject-specific search engines (finance, froogle)
   4. Media-specific search engines (images, video)

There are, of course, other options. A logical idea would be to split the page into two new articles of "Services" and "Tools". But then, the hard thing would be maintaining both pages, ensuring each new service or tool has been placed onto the "correct" page.

I think 'products' can include both tools and services, because they are all productions from Google. A website is essentially a product.

We have had a similar poll in the past (1st June) which resulted in the current article format however MamboJambo has created list format, this was orignally an option although a draft was never created. The options are Keep to keep the current and Change to change to this simple list format.

Google's Image Labeler "game" isn't really a product. Users don't go there seeking information, like they do the rest of Google's products and services. Instead, its just Google saying "help us sort this stuff out," and users provide free labor to Google. omg you can hi it's jb im holding auditions for my next music video. On the list we have:

• Google Code Search
• Google Web API
• Google Web Toolkit

These are all "sub-products" of the Google Code product. While they in themselves are products we need to either add all Google APIs (unrealistic) or have none. Same goes for the Code Search, while it is a seperate product in the sense of it, it is still part of Google Code.

I agree with the readability issues, i think it's because of the ammount of information crammed into the table. However, unlike other company product lists we need to provide some info (a line or two) on all the products because not all the products have their own seperate wiki pages.

Debatable, but I'd say keep it as it is. For example, you use Google News to SEARCH for news content (even though the latest news is there), but the likes of Google Reader is much more precise and customised in what you want - it's an aggregator of web feeds. Google may be a reliable company as in they will always be out there but I'm finding it harder to rely on some of their products but I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that gmail and iGoogle will always be there. --DrM4rio (talk) 18:10, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Google is with 85 % of years income of the Mozilla Foundation by far the most important sponsor, but sponsorship doesn't equal ownership. It's akin to saying GM owns a newspaper because the car company is the biggest advertiser.
