In 2012, the leading candidate for the presidency of Iran, a moderate, dies in a helicopter crash, leaving anti-Israel, pro-nuclear candidate Cantar Walley the most likely to win the upcoming election. Because of this, CIA executive and former Texas congressman Tom Tavner schemes to get his CIA operative son, John, a job at McMillan, a Milwaukee engineering firm that travels to Luxembourg often. Using non-Official cover (NOC) to travel to Luxembourg and later Iran, Tom will hand off money to support a rival moderate candidate in the election. John's brother Edward, who succeeded his father in Congress, is sent to fetch him from Amsterdam. John agrees to go back only if he loses a mechanical bull competition, which he throws.

He eventually pushes his competitor Stephen Tchoo in front of a van to secure the job and has McMillan worker Dennis McClaren provide urine for him in order to pass a drug test. Upon arrival in Luxembourg, the money bag is stolen by Brazilian airport worker Edgar Barros. While going to confront Barros, John is forced to deter a curious Dennis by stabbing him in the leg. He is attacked by Barros' brothers and kills one of them to escape, recovering the bag. He gives it to Mikham Candahar, not realizing that Candahar works for Walley. Arriving late to a meeting as a result of these events, John is informed by his boss, Leslie Claret, that he will not be returning to Luxembourg on future trips.
22"C-19"Steven ConradSteven ConradFebruary 23, 2017 (2017-02-23)
Luxembourg homicide detective Agathe Albans, investigating the murder of Barros's brother, attempts to gain permission to interview Dennis in America about his stabbing, but Tom uses his Interpol connections to stall her. John's wife Alice, increasingly concerned about him, tries to get out of Edward what John is actually doing for work, but Edward refuses to talk. McMillan security guard and disgraced ex-cop Jack Birdbath reveals to John that he overheard him illicitly getting Dennis' urine. Birdbath forces John to steal prosthetic devices from several impaired cops who manage the local Milwaukee police evidence room, one aid being a therapy dog named Charlie, and then to place a box with unknown contents in the room. Leslie threatens to fire John if he parks in Leslie's parking spot one more time. He eagerly sits watching company lot before work as John arrives, only for John to stop when he nearly hits Agathe, who has come to America.
33"McMillan Man"Steven ConradSteven ConradFebruary 23, 2017 (2017-02-23)
In 2002, Leslie, then a very successful engineer, was jailed for two years for embezzling his company's funds to feed his cocaine addiction. He got a job with McMillan, but was told he will never go past the level of divisional management because of his past. In the present, John does not park in Leslie's spot, but he performs poorly at an important meeting and realizes he is about to be fired. Agathe has been able to come to America after Tom's Interpol contact dies of a stroke, and she interviews Dennis, whom John coaches beforehand. Dennis performs passably but mentions John's name. On Dennis' advice, John goes on the company duck hunt to try and set things right with Leslie, but he is unwillingly forced to shoot ducks for McMillan executive Lawrence Lacroix, who wants to impress a female subordinate. After John learns how important Charlie is to his owner, he considers keeping the dog, but decides to let him go home.

John returns to Luxembourg and attacks Barros in the airport, taping him up and putting him in a backpack. John is unable to give the bag to Edward as planned, because Agathe is suspicious of Edward after an interview and has one of her colleagues following him. He tracks Mikham to his new hotel, but Barros' struggling alerts him and he attacks John before escaping. John is unable to find the money, but he steals a small safe from Mikham's room. John hands Barros and the safe off to Edward and Dennis before performing well at a McMillan conference. He notices Rob Saperstein, a musician with whom he once recorded music, giving their CD with John's photo on its jacket to Agathe. Dennis and Edward break the safe by dropping it on the pavement from several floors up and find the passport of Japanese puppeteer Numi Haruno inside. John follows Agathe to her apartment but collapses from exhaustion in the street while covertly observing her.

While living in Amsterdam, John had met Saperstein, and the two ended up recording a full acoustic album the same night they met. In the present, John breaks into Agathe's apartment after she leaves, but he finds that she has taken the CD and he's seen by her young daughter Myna. He trades Barros back to his brothers along with $170,000 in exchange for them leaving him alone, but they still scheme to kill him and take the rest of his money. Tom has Edward befriend Mikham's brother Kkyman to learn where Mikham will be, and John tracks Mikham down and kills him. He goes to Belgium to perform at a concert with Saperstein, but he forgets the lyrics to their song and starts singing about his regrets over letting Leslie think poorly of him. Returning to Luxembourg, John finds the bag that held the money in the middle of the street.

The bag is revealed to have been stolen by Numi, who is arrested for several other petty thefts. John, Leslie, Lacroix, and McMillan worker Peter Icabod, who is aware that John faked his credentials, are called to the police station to be interviewed about the night of Barros' murder. All of them implicate John, while he notices the bag, which has an airport tag with his name on it, being transported through the station. While trying to steal it, John is spotted by Myna again, but she has concluded that he's not real. As the cart passes him, he tries to pull the tag, but the elastic cord doesn't break and he lets it go. Edward evades his police tail and attempts to write John's name in the borrowers' list of a piping book written by Leslie in order to provide an alibi, but finds that all the copies have been checked out from the Luxembourg library. He alerts John, which prompts him to leave the station before he can be interviewed.

An increasingly disconnected John calls Charlie's owner and asks to speak to the dog, but is turned away. Stephen, who has returned to work with brain damage, is recovering, and John realizes Stephen may identify John as the man who pushed him; accordingly, John works to impede Stephen's recovery. Lacroix privately tells Leslie that McMillan is going bankrupt, and Leslie agrees to take on higher responsibilities in exchange for firing John, which Lacroix agrees to do following the next duck hunt. Alice listens to a voice message from John, who sings a song in which he admits he has been haphazardly riding his bike through traffic at night, not caring if he lives or dies as he wants to be free from the demands of his work. She promptly books a flight to Milwaukee, unknowingly reserving a seat next to Agathe, who is flying out to interview John.

With Agathe coming to America, Tom informs John that he plans to pull him out of McMillan, but then learns that the Iranian woman to whom the money will be handed off has been given a specific date and tells John to stay where he is so he can get it back. John steals a copy of Leslie's book that he checked out from Luxembourg from his office and doctors it to have his name in it. Birdbath explains to John that as a police officer he was acquitted for shooting a child while drunk, and the box he placed was supposed to prove his guilt. He now wants John to kill him at work in order to increase the amount of money that will be sent to the dead child's family. Alice, recognizing Agathe from their flight together and sympathetic to her struggles with transportation in America, drives her to Milwaukee. Alice contacts Dennis, knowing she cannot be seen near John but wanting him to know she is there. John is pretending to be left-handed to mislead Agathe in his coming interview. Leslie, wanting to give John one more chance, asks him to draw a circle just as Agathe enters the office, and John poorly draws it with his left hand, prompting Leslie to tell John he is soon to be fired. Just before John can kill Birdbath, Dennis intercepts him to tell him about Alice, leading John to realize Agathe is following him. Agathe and John play Rochambeau to choose what day they interview, and after dozens of rounds, Agathe wins. John receives a message from Saperstein, which is a song and suicide note that thanks John for being his friend. John sits down with Agathe and tells her that he is not actually fully qualified for his job as an engineer.

John explains that he faked his credentials, and that the reason he was late to Leslie's meeting was because he was studying Leslie's book in the library. He passes her handwriting test that was intended to link him with the Barros murder by writing with his left hand, and Edward, having received the doctored book, sneaks it into the library moments before Agathe's colleague arrives to confirm John's alibi. John goes to see Alice at her motel, but Tom, having learned that Agathe is in the room next to her, stops him. Alice realizes Agathe is a police officer through her email address and goes through her room, finding that John is being investigated for murder. Tom accompanies John on the hunting trip and repeatedly tries to convince Leslie to keep John with him, he but fails. Birdbath is angry that John failed to kill him, but ultimately decides he wants to keep living and does not report John. Having run out of options, Tom tells John that he needs to pull a "Dick Cheney" by shooting Leslie in the face.

John fulfills Icabod's request for physical contact to satisfy Icabod and non-fatally shoots Leslie in the face, opening a spot on the Luxembourg team. Stephen, now almost confident that John pushed him and ready to tell, is pushed in front of another van by John. John is almost stopped from leaving by faulty paperwork he has failed to correct, but his CIA assistant Ron arrives at the last minute and saves him. Mikham's body is found, and the circumstances around him lead him to be implicated as Barros' murderer, although Myna tells Agathe she is certain she saw John in their home. She calls a hospitalized Leslie, who confirms that John showed up to their meeting with the bag. Tom orders John to kill the Iranian woman who will be picking up the money for Walley, but he instead goes for a bike ride and gets hit by a car. Edward, who has been informed by Alice that John is being investigated for murder, is against John leaving to get the money back, but Tom orders him to go. John dispatches Kkyman, who is now working for Walley, as well as a Barros brother that is tailing him, and catches up to Numi, but she explains that she left the money with the police, only wanting the bag for her puppet show. Agathe discovers the money and takes it, and John follows her to a train station, where she promises him that he will suffer no consequences for his crimes if he lets her go with the money. As he watches her get on the train, Tom calls to tell him that Edward has been kidnapped and they need the money.

Production

Actors Terry O'Quinn and Michael Dorman and screenwriter Steve Conrad discuss Patriot for New America in 2017.

Development

On May 14, 2015, it was reported that Amazon had given the production, written by Steven Conrad and then titled The Patriot, a pilot order.[2] On September 23, 2015, the series' pilot order was confirmed and further information regarding the series was released. It was announced that the series had been retitled Patriot and that Conrad was confirmed to direct the pilot episode and executive produce alongside Gil Bellows, Glenn Ficarra, Charlie Gogolak, and John Requa.[3][4]

On December 18, 2015, it was announced that the production had been given a series order.[5] On January 27, 2017, it was reported that the rest of season one would premiere in its entirety on February 24, 2017.[6]

On April 18, 2017, it was announced that the series had been renewed for a second season.[7] On October 10, 2018, it was announced that the second season would premiere on November 9, 2018.[8]

Casting

In August 2015, it was announced that Kurtwood Smith, Michael Dorman, Kathleen Munroe, and Terry O'Quinn had been cast in the pilot's lead roles.[9][10][11] On March 22, 2016, it was reported that Chris Conrad, previously cast in a guest appearance in the pilot episode, had been upped to a series regular capacity for the remainder of season one.[12]

Filming

Principal photography for the first season commenced in the spring of 2016 in Chicago, Illinois.[14]

On Rotten Tomatoes it received an overall score of 91%, and an overall score of 71 on Metacritic.[19][20]

Season 1

The first season met with positive critical response. On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds an 82% approval rating with an average rating of 6.5 out of 10 based on 28 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Patriot is dark, quirky, and often funny -- and although its risks don't always pay off, the series is still savvy and inspired enough to watch."[15] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the season a score of 68 out of 100 based on 16 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[16]

Many of the first season's Luxembourg based exterior scenes were filmed in Prague.[21] The Luxemburger Wort's culture correspondent noted the apparent lack of effort and accuracy in portraying the landmarks and geography that characterize Luxembourg City, with Prague being a poor substitute for their depiction.[21] He recorded that the frequent onscreen appearance of unmistakable famous Prague landmarks, such as the Charles Bridge, throughout Luxembourg shots hinder the suspension of disbelief for viewers familiar with either location.[21] Additionally, he identified certain factual inaccuracies about Luxembourg in the script, including a claim that Brazilian nationals make up a substantial minority of Luxembourg residents, when in fact it is Portuguese nationals.[21] Despite what he labeled as these "absurd inaccuracies" he recommended the series for fans of dark comedy.[21]

Season 2

The second season also received positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 100% approval rating with an average rating of 6.7 out of 10 based on 11 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Patriot's second season is dark as pitch and ticks along to a slow-burning surreality, but viewers who are willing to invest in the series' moody pleasures will find themselves infiltrated by its scabrous humor and crackerjack dialogue."[17] On Metacritic, it has a score of 80 out of 100 based on 4 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[18]
