Lylla is a character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema, the character first appeared in Incredible Hulk #271 (February 1982).[1][2] Lylla is an anthropomorphic otter.[3][4] She is the heiress to the toymaking empire Mayhem Mekaniks.[5][6] She is also the friend and lover of superhero Rocket Raccoon.
Lylla appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), voiced by Linda Cardellini.
Publication history
Lylla debuted in Incredible Hulk #271 (February 1982),[7][8] created by writer Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema.[9][10] She appeared in the 2011 Annihilators series.[11][12][13] She appeared in the 2023 Rocket Raccoon: Marvel Tales anthology one-shot.[14]
Fictional character biography
Lylla inherits the toymaking company Mayhem Mekaniks after her parents are murdered by rival Judson Jakes, who wants to take over the company.[15] The only way for Lylla to gain full control is through marriage. Lylla soon comes under threat from not just Jakes, but also Lord Dyvyne, with both wanting to control her toy company.[16] Luckily, Rocket Raccoon comes to her aid. With the help of their friends, Wal Rus and Uncle Pyko, they defeat both parties.[17] Lylla travels with Rocket afterward to start a new life together.[18] These events are later revealed to be false. Lylla, along with the rest of the halfworlders, are actually service animals who care for mental patients on their planet.[volume & issue needed] She was once married to Blackjack O'Hare.[19]
Powers and abilities
Lylla possesses the normal attributes of an Earth otter, which includes being an excellent swimmer.[20][21]

Rachel Harp of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals praised Lylla for highlighting the "evils of animal testing" across Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.[citation needed] Ashvaria Rai of Comic Book Resources wrote, "Lylla leaves a lasting impact on audiences, even with her all-too-brief screen time in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Her gentleness toward others and contagious hope for a better life establish her as one of the most amicable new characters."[22] Hannah Saab and Vidhi Narula of Collider ranked the final quote of Lylla in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 1st in their "11 Best Inspirational Marvel Quotes" list.[23] Michael Walsh of Nerdist ranked Lylla 6th in their "10 Best Animals in the MCU" list, calling her "the greatest cybernetically-enhanced otter."[24] Anthony Orlando of Digital Trends ranked Lylla 6th in their "Best Characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" list.[25]

- Lylla is referenced in Guardians of the Galaxy, where her name appears during the mugshot sequence on a panel next to Rocket Raccoon.[26][27][28]
- Lylla appears in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, voiced by Linda Cardellini.[29][30][31] This version, also referred to as 89Q12,[32][33] is a creation of the High Evolutionary and sports robotic arms.[34][35] In flashbacks, she befriended fellow test subjects Rocket, Teefs, and Floor and attempted to escape Counter-Earth, though all save for Rocket were killed. In the present, amidst a near-death experience, Rocket briefly reunites with Lylla,[36][37] who tells him that his time to join them in the afterlife has not yet come.[38]
