There are above sixty pages for showing IPA symbols for pronunciations of the world's most spoken languages. But there is no page for Bengali language whence it is the sixth language that people speak most. So I think there should be a page for Bengali; that is why I have initiated this page. I have done it in the model of Wikipedia:IPA for Malay and Wikipedia:IPA for Hindi and Urdu. There are a lot of Hindi sounds which are pronounced in the same way Bengali sounds. So IPA for Hindi are same to Bengali. Therefore I have taken the English equivalents from Wikipedia:IPA for Hindi and Urdu chart. Moreover for a more thorough look at the sounds of Bengali I have went to Romanization of Bengali and Bangla Academy Babyaharik Bangla Abhidhan and etc. Anyway it is not yet totally complete, so I am asking others to improve it. --Smmmaniruzzaman (talk) 04:54, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress

There is a move discussion in progress on Help talk:IPA which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 16:15, 15 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect

From a first sight. The page has errors. For example, it states that Bengali has [z] when in fact it is [d͡ʑ], without indicating that the former is rare and is only in a few learned loanwords. I know Bengalis who struggle to pronounce the fricative, so I was surprised to read the claim! --Mahmudmasri (talk) 20:45, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

English transcriptions for Bengali words?

Since this article is used as reference for English speakers, it'd probably make sense to add transcriptions for the Bengali words supplied. puggo 19:04, 3 March 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bug2266 (talkcontribs)

  • In Bengali,"ঞ" is differentiated as a palatal sound in times of pronunciation. It is only used in Persian-derived words and conjuct consonants, like example given.
  • Although "ক্ষ" is pronounced as 'kʰ' but only if there is no vowel in beginning. Bengalis tend to add 'k' sound in beginning if it's preceded by vowel(kkʰ).
  • In some dialects,"ণ" is pronounced as 'ɳ'(retroflex n) hence it should be in marginal consonants.
  • Please read the book "Development of Bengali language" by Suniti Chatterji for help or contact a Bengali-known person.

If you found any mistake, please reply before editing. I've also correct some punctuation, typos and added links.Prinaki (talk) 06:49, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have tweaked & reverted some of the changes you made because [kkʰ] is not mentioned or supported as a main/marginal phoneme by the Bengali phonology/Bengali alphabet articles (The palatal [ɲ] is not supported by the Bengali phonology article either, even though the Bengali alphabet article mentions it as being the original sound for ঞ), so therefore not a listed phoneme of Bengali not to mention this phoneme is just a geminated [kʰ], which the doubled consonants bit in the Suprasegmentals section is meant to cover meaning that extra unsupported transcriptions here like [kkʰ] & [ɲ] add unnecessary clutter. The whole point of an IPA Help page in Wikipedia is so that IPA symbols for any specific language (Bengali in this instance) are transcribed for Wikipedia readers to look at if they want to know any specific pronunciation in that language as long as the phonology sections/articles for these languages support them first, IPA Help pages are not meant to provide details on specific letters or alphabets for readers - the Bengali alphabet article is more appropriate for that than this (see also WP:MOSPRON). জ which is /dʒ/ should also include /ɟ/ (it doesn't have to be a affricate; rather I'd say it is more a plosive than an affricate) ঝ which is /dʒ/ should also include /ɟʰ/ চ which is /tʃ/ should also include /c/ ছ which is /tʃʰ/ should also include /cʰ/ The second ones can be better. Reference: https://ipa.bangla.gov.bd/ipa_allignment this site has some mistakes but I think in case of জ, ঝ, চ, ছ atleast, they are right. Even if you reject my proposal please inform me; I'd look forward to know what happened. AbdunNafiAlif (talk) 05:27, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Query on Diphthongs

I noticed that ii̯, ei̯ & ou̯ were listed under 'Diphthongs'. Shouldn't they be iː, eː & oː respectively? This is just a query - not a native speaker here, so please correct me on this topic. Username203 (talk) 13:26, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
