Works published in the United States between 1923 and 1963 with a copyright notice, but whose copyright was not renewed, are in the public domain. Works copyrighted before 1964 had to have the copyright renewed sometime in their 28th year. This October 26, 1953 issue of Time would have to be renewed in 1981.
