La villa de l'Empereur Hadrien (117-138) s'étend sur les pentes des monts Tiburtini et couvre 120 hectares.

Hadrien, grand voyageur, voulut évoquer les différentes parties de son Empire au sein du domaine de la Villa.

La construction du complexe a duré 10 ans et le domaine comprend de nombreux bâtiments : le palais, plusieurs thermes, des bibliothèques, des logements, des plans d'eau, des portiques et promenoirs, un nymphée, des temples,...

La villa a été dévastée par les invasions barbares, puis servit de carrière. Les premières fouilles ont été menées dès la Renaissance mais elles ont conduit a un pillage systématique des sculptures, mosaïques et colonnes ouvragées.
