Der Stich entstand als Frontispiz zu Bertanis Werk "Gli oscuri e dificili passi dell'opera ionica di Vitruvio" und bildete zugleich eine ehrende Anspielung auf den Kardinal Ercole Gonzaga, dem das Buch gewidmet war. Der nicht zuletzt mit seiner reich ausgestatteten Bordüre beeindruckende Stich, hier in einem prachtvollen, farbsatten und schön differenzierten Druck. Mit feinem Rändchen um die Einfassungslinie, links partiell auf diese geschnitten sowie mit der rechts die Einfassungslinie überschneidenden Klaue der Hydra. Am rechten Rand alt auf Bütten montiert, horizontale Mittelfalte, sonst in sehr guter Erhaltung. Sehr selten.
