Offseason

• October 15, 1998: Chance Sanford was released by the Pittsburgh Pirates.^[2]
• November 17, 1998: Mike Benjamin was signed as a free agent by the Pirates.^[3]
• November 18, 1998: Ricardo Rincón was traded by the Pirates to the Cleveland Indians for Brian Giles.^[4]
